This week's issue, on newsstands this afternoon..

Not yet included, as it happened last night, is the decision for Flandreau School's new Superintendent. The district has offered the position to Quinton Cermak, previously with the Highmore-Harrold School District https://tinyurl.com/3c39ttsb. He will take over for longtime educator and administrator Rick Weber, effective July 1, 2025.

Also developing this Tuesday, is a decision before Flandreau's City Council. This evening, Council members will be asked to decide if it will accept the offer to take over the Moody County Ambulance Service. The City of Flandreau formally responded on Friday to Moody County’s frustrations over financial losses tied to the county ambulance service.

Last Tuesday, commissioners voted to transfer the service to the city, arguing that if Flandreau wasn’t planning to increase its financial support, it should take over the operation — especially since the majority of calls come from within city limits. A letter to the city was formalized on Thursday and sent.

City officials maintain they are committed to seeing the service continue. What that might look like, they believe a Task Force will help determine ... but they are up against a very tight deadline.

Read the city's response below.

More than a year after Moody County openly requested additional funding from the Flandreau City Council to support the local ambulance service — which the county has operated since 1989 — commissioners took a decisive step this past week. Commissioners voted to propose transferring the ambulance service, along with all its responsibilities and resources, to the City of Flandreau on Tuesday.

Frustrated by the lack of progress on the funding request, the county formalized its offer in the attached document.

The City of Flandreau convened an emergency meeting on Friday to discuss the proposal. Stay tuned for council's official response.

I visit with folks often about how important it is to be as informed as possible and engaged with what might be happening in and around our communities. Because, as much as any of us might want to feel that what happens elsewhere - perhaps at the neighbors, or at the school, or in town, with our local decision makers, even state and national leaders, for instance - doesn't impact us or perhaps matter, it can and often does.

And as I switch profiles this afternoon to share some information about an important conversation that is ongoing in Moody County - and one that will be further reported on in this next issue, I'm realizing just how long its been that I've been on here to share anything about what might be happening.

This is Carleen Wild, your local editor for the MCE.

As much as technology helps us communicate, I'm going to be honest and say that I've grown weary of being on my computer and phone any more than absolutely necessary in recent years. I've been in news in some form my entire 30+ year career and it used to be a constant. This particular role for me is also largely part-time, I work in other roles that have me away from my phone and laptop much of the day. Additionally, at our local but mighty paper, we have a very small staff (2 of us locally) so at the end of the day, it just hasn't been at the top of our collective priority list.

But given online is where we typically turn anymore to see or learn what might be happening, I'm going to tell you that in 2025, I and we will work harder to grow the amount of information we are sharing here and online with our local paper's website. We always strive to be absolutely accurate, open, informed, factual and fair. The conversations happening locally do matter, they introduce you to new things happening, important issues that might need your input, and help shape the future of what we want our communities and region to look like.

Saying that, we also rely on each of you to help keep us informed about events, people worth profiling, issues that have come up, and everything else local. Please stay in touch here and with us via phone/email, and I will do my best here and in print, along with my colleague, ML, to do the same.

Be well, Moody County.
Carleen
