Donna Awcock

On the night of October 12, 1983, 17-year-old Donna Jean Awcock was babysitting for a neighbour in London, Ontario. When her shift ended, she set out for a short walk — but she never made it home.

The next morning, October 13, Donna’s body was found near the Thames River by the Fanshawe Dam. She had been sexually assaulted and strangled. For forty years, her case has remained unsolved.

In this episode, we explore Donna’s life, the night she disappeared, and the investigation that followed. We also place her case within the pattern of unsolved murders that haunted London, Ontario, during the 1970s and 80s — a city some criminologists later called the “serial killer capital of Canada.”

If you have any information about the murder of Donna Jean Awcock, please contact the Ontario Provincial Police or Crime Stoppers.

Ep 130 MMIWG: Patricia Calahasen

It was the early hours of August 3rd, 2001, in Edmonton, Alberta, when fire crews responded to a dumpster blaze behind a central apartment building. Once the flames were out, they made a horrifying discovery — the burned remains of a young woman.

For nearly two weeks, investigators worked to find out who she was. They canvassed hundreds of apartments and narrowed their search to a short list of missing women. Dental records would confirm the victim was 18-year-old Patricia Calahasen.

What police uncovered next was a story of trust betrayed, a violent assault, and a desperate attempt to destroy the evidence. The person responsible was just 17 years old.

But for Patricia’s family, the fight for justice has lasted decades.

Ep 129 Missing: Dylan Koshman

In October 2008, 21-year-old Dylan Koshman disappeared from south Edmonton after a late-night argument with his cousins. He left the house wearing only jeans and a t-shirt—and without his phone, wallet, or jacket—never to be seen again. Initially treated as a missing-person case, the investigation was later reclassified as a homicide. Dylan’s wallet was recovered from a neighboring yard, but no other trace of him has been found. Years later, the case remains unresolved, classified by police as suspended, with no charges laid.

Newly obtained records are shedding light on how RCMP investigators have worked behind the scenes to trace the movements of the children’s mother, Malehya Brooks-Murray, and her then-boyfriend, Daniel Martell, in the hours and days leading up to May 2, when 6-year-old Lilly and 4-year-old Jack vanished from their rural home in Lansdowne Station.

The redacted files include 12 record-access orders and outline the investigative steps taken under the Missing Persons Act.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀::

• Electronic and financial tracking: Police obtained data from phones, GPS devices, call logs, chat logs, email accounts, and bank transactions belonging to Brooks-Murray and Martell to verify their accounts of events.

• App data: Investigators accessed Brooks-Murray’s TextPlus Wi-Fi calling app after she deleted it in early July.

• Surveillance evidence: RCMP collected camera footage from the Cobequid Pass toll plaza between May 1 and May 3 to confirm whether the children may have left Nova Scotia. The last confirmed sighting of Jack and Lilly was on May 1 at 2:25 p.m. at a Dollarama in New Glasgow.

• Polygraph testing: Both Brooks-Murray and Martell underwent separate polygraphs on May 12 and passed. Over the following weeks, several relatives also took polygraphs, including the children’s biological father Cody Sullivan (truthful), their grandmother Cyndy Brooks-Murray, and her boyfriend Wade Paris (both passed). Martell’s mother, Janie MacKenzie, was also tested, but her results were deemed “unsuitable for analysis.”

• Statements from Brooks-Murray: In interviews, she described Martell as “an involved parent” who the children respected, and denied any physical discipline in the home. Some sections of her accounts remain heavily redacted.

• Blanket evidence: Searchers located pieces of a pink LOL doll blanket, believed to belong to Lilly. One piece was found near the roadside and another in a garbage bin at the home. According to Brooks-Murray, the blanket had been torn previously and was later discarded. Martell had reportedly used it to block a draft at the door.

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀:

• Despite the exhaustive search — which included dense forests, mine shafts, wells, waterways, helicopters, drones, and more than 100 trained volunteers — there has been no trace of the children.

• RCMP say they have received 740 public tips and over 9,300 videos, all of which are still being reviewed by major crime investigators.

• As of July 16, investigators reported they did not believe a criminal offence had occurred, but they continue to treat the disappearance as a very active investigation under the Missing Persons Act.

• RCMP spokesperson Allison Gerrard said: “The Nova Scotia RCMP is using every available resource to help locate Lilly and Jack and determine the circumstances of their disappearance. The team remains committed to exploring all possible scenarios.”

More than three months later, Jack and Lilly’s disappearance continues to devastate the community and draw national attent

Notorious drug dealer whose operation fueled deadly overdoses in Campbell River, BC, sentenced to 13 years in prison.

Leah Lewis Jailed 13 Years After Massive Drug Seizure in Campbell River

The Campbell River RCMP — including front-line members, the Street Crime Unit, the Major Crime Unit — along with the Federal Crown, are being recognized for their outstanding work in bringing a major drug trafficking case to a close.

On July 31, 2025, 57-year-old Leah Marie Lewis was sentenced in Campbell River Provincial Court to 13 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to trafficking charges stemming from one of the largest drug busts in our region’s recent history.

How the Investigation Began

The case started last November when a Campbell River bank customer told staff he had been kidnapped and was being forced to transfer his vehicle and thousands of dollars to drug traffickers. Bank employees called police, and the RCMP Street Crime Unit began monitoring several suspects.

Investigators observed meetings with known drug users and street-level dealers at hotels, parking lots, and residences in and around Campbell River.

The Raids

On February 21, 2024, police executed a search warrant at the Nursery Road property, described as “fortress-like” in court documents. Officers seized:

3,500 Dilaudid (hydromorphone) tablets — believed to be diverted from B.C.’s safe supply program
2 kilograms of fentanyl — potentially hundreds of thousands of lethal doses
1 kilogram of co***ne
1 kilogram of methamphetamine
Cash, weapons, and drug trafficking materials
Evidence showed the fentanyl was being diluted, dyed, flavoured, and molded into shapes like dinosaurs and Lego bricks

Charges and Outcomes

Four people — Leah Lewis, Chris Lewis, Shyanne Davis, and Serena Hadley — were charged with drug trafficking. One charge specifically alleged trafficking hydromorphone.

Numerous charges against Leah Lewis and her co-accused were dropped in exchange for her guilty plea. With credit for time already served, she has 12 years and 15 days remaining on her sentence. At which time she will be 69 years old. She also received a mandatory lifetime fi****ms ban.

Earlier this year, separate charges against Lewis in Port Alberni for breaching release conditions were stayed.

The accused have since been banished from the We Wai Kai First Nation.

Community Impact

We Wai Kai Chief Ronnie Chickite says the case highlights concerns about government-funded safe supply medication ending up in the illicit market:

“It’s never ‘safe’ when it’s in the hands of drug dealers. I think the program had intentions, but it’s obviously failed… Seeing the amount that was there — it’s unfortunate, but it’s not the system we need.”

In June 1959, 12-year-old Lynne Harper disappeared from the small community of Clinton, Ontario. Two days later, her body was found in a wooded area near a rural concession road. What followed was one of the most infamous wrongful convictions in Canadian history.

Steven Truscott, a 14-year-old classmate, was arrested, charged with Lynne’s murder, and sentenced to death — all within weeks. For decades, Steven fought to clear his name, facing a justice system that refused to admit its mistakes. His case became a landmark example of wrongful conviction, influencing public opinion, legal reform, and how Canada handles cases involving young offenders.

In this episode, we revisit the murder of Lynne Harper and the conviction that changed the life of Steven Truscott. We’ll explore the flawed investigation, the trial’s key evidence, and how Steven’s fight for justice unfolded over nearly half a century.
