Episode 148: The Johnson and Bentley Family Murders

In August 1982, David William Shearing murdered six members of the Johnson and Bentley families while they were on a camping trip near Wells Gray Provincial Park in British Columbia. George and Edith Bentley, their daughter Jackie Johnson, her husband Bob Johnson, and the couple’s two young daughters Janet, thirteen, and Karen, eleven, were killed in one of the most disturbing crimes in Canadian history. Shearing pleaded guilty in 1984 to six counts of second-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for twenty-five years. In 1994 he legally changed his name to David Ennis.

He has applied for parole multiple times. He has never been released. And now, in 2026, he has waived his right to an in-person hearing — meaning the surviving family will not be permitted to attend, speak, or read their victim impact statements when his next application is reviewed this August.

In this episode of True North True Crime, we speak with Shelley Bowden, niece of Bob and Jackie Johnson, about the murders, the decades-long fight to keep Shearing behind bars, and what the family is facing now. We also cover the investigation, the confession, the trial, and the parole hearings that have forced the family to relive this crime again and again for nearly twenty years.

(Episode link in comments)

In this episode, we speak with the family of missing 22-year-old Liam Toman — his father Chris, mother Kathleen, and stepmother Lara.

Liam disappeared during a ski trip to Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, in the early morning hours of February 2, 2025. He was last seen walking back toward his hotel in the resort village after a night out with friends, but he never made it back. Since then, his family has been searching tirelessly for answers while navigating the unimaginable reality of having a loved one vanish without explanation.

In this episode, Liam’s family shares who Liam is beyond the headlines, the emotional toll of his disappearance, and why they continue fighting to keep his story in the public eye. They also discuss the ongoing investigation, their advocacy efforts in Mont-Tremblant, and the hope that someone, somewhere, may still hold the key to bringing Liam home.

A $50,000 reward is currently being offered for information that leads to answers in Liam’s disappearance.

Ep. Bailey McCourt Part 2
(Link in comments)

As Bailey’s law makes its way to the Senate, our second episode on her case is available.

Hours after being convicted of assaulting his wife Bailey McCourt, James Plover walked out of a Kelowna courthouse on existing bail. Within three hours, she was dead, killed in a parking lot in broad daylight in front of witnesses. She was 32 years old and a mother of two.

This is Part 2 of a two-part series on the Bailey McCourt case. In this episode we cover the July 4th attack, the questions it raised about how the justice system handles intimate partner violence, and the national push for legislative change that followed. We spoke directly with members of Bailey's family, who have been advocating for Bailey's Law, Bill C-225, which passed second reading in the House of Commons with a unanimous 325 to zero vote. Since recording the bill has now passed third reading and makes its way to the senate for debate.

If you have not listened to Part 1, start there.

Episode: Bailey McCourt Part 1
(Episode links in comment section)

Bailey McCourt was a 32-year-old mother of two from Kelowna, British Columbia. In June of 2024, her husband, James Plover, assaulted her inside their home, grabbing her by the throat and threatening to kill her. Bailey called 911.

Plover was charged with assault by choking and uttering threats. She cooperated with police, sat through a trial, and waited nearly a year for a verdict. On July 4th, 2025, he was found guilty. Hours later, Bailey was dead.

In this episode, joined by members of Bailey’s family, we tell her story, who she was, the intimate partner violence she endured, the court case, and the conviction that should have protected her.

This is Part 1 of a two-part series on the Bailey McCourt case. Part 2 drops April 30th.

MMIMB: SEBASTIAN MOORE
(Spotify and Apple links in comment section)

Sebastian Moore was seventeen years old when he was stabbed and killed in Terrace, British Columbia on the night of November 26th, 2023. A youth was briefly taken into custody but after more than a year of investigation, Crown Counsel declined to approve charges, determining the incident met the legal definition of self-defence.

Sebastian was a member of Kitselas Nation along the Skeena River in northwestern B.C. His family called him Boots. He was training to become an electrician. He was an uncle. He was seventeen.

In this episode, we speak with his brother Oscar and grandmother Debbie about who he was, and what his family has faced since.

His case has been raised in the BC legislature. His community has marched for him. His family is still fighting.

Sebastian's story is part of the documented pattern of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Men and Boys, MMIMB, in Canada.
