Pepper Guru Traveling the World in Search of Peppers

My main curiosity was soil biology and it’s role in growing the healthiest plants possible. In 1994 I planted some Thai Dragon peppers in our garden and my dad would dare me to try them before he would eat them. chinense pepper was at the age of 16. That fruity, smoky, citrusy burst, followed by an extreme heat, was unlike anything I had ever tasted in my garden before. This new world of flavors s

parked what would become a life long infatuation and set me on a quest, Traveling The World In Search of Peppers. Fast forward to present with nearly 30 years of cultivation experience, field collections abroad, trades and friendships made, the pepper community looks much different than it did back in the 1990’s. I’ve administrated some of the world’s largest cultivation forums and continue to share my passion with other pepper enthusiasts across various platforms. I now travel the world in search of my favorite pepper varieties from their region of origin. Nothing is more rewarding than hand picking peppers in each village, farm or hidden trail we discover on our adventures along the way. The people we meet and the friendships we make are what truly breathes life into our journey. The shared passion for peppers across so many different cultures may just be the key to understanding that we are all more alike than we realize.

Propagating these Fig cuttings from our friend Nahn over at - Hopefully I followed his instructions properly! Seemed straightforward enough. Score bottom internode sites to cambium layer, apply rooting hormone, keep RH up on them. Looking forward to enjoying these cultivars this season on first growth! Thanks again Nahn! 🙏❤️

At the base of Machu Picchu sits Aguas Calientes—home to the beloved Rocoto pepper. Rocoto Rojo, Amarillo, and Naranja have been grown here for thousands of years, barely changing under Andean hands. This is the pure, central lineage: Rocoto Rojo Machu Picchu.

Imagine forgetting this is in your raised bed and going out to pick a few peppers at night 🤣

Rocoto Rojo - Mercado Centro - Zamora, Ecuador.

If you ever find yourself in Zamora, the land of Birds and Waterfalls, be sure to check out the Mercado Centro!

These Rocoto Rojo were the hottest pepper available in the entire market during my visit. They weren’t lying! Almost as hot as the Farm Locoto from Samaipata!

The vendor ladies did mention a hotter, smaller, pepper available in the region, but it was not harvest time for those yet. I wonder what they could’ve been referring to?

Aguas Calientes is a landlocked town that serves as the base camp for Machu Picchu in Peru. Theres only one way in other than by train…and thats on foot. Every year thousands of Inca and Salkantay hikers end up here at the end of their journey towards the megalithic ruines of Machu Picchu.

Here you can find markets and gardens along the cobblestone streets that offer some of the best Rocoto peppers in the world. Thousands of years of selection pressure, from the indigenous people and modern farmers alike, resulting in these delicious and spicy fruits we have here.

My son and I found these Rocoto Naranja while visiting Machu Picchu and searching for Capsicum geminifolium nearby.

One thing I've noticed when sowing seeds from collections of yellow pepper plants in South America is you'll often find a surprise.

These beautiful Rocoto Rojo from Zamora are a variant we ended up finding when sowing from the yellows (Rocoto Amarillo).

They're a natural F₁ hybrid from that population, originating in Zamora, Ecuador. Genetically, red is dominant (Rr), so they segregate in a classic 3:1 red-to-yellow ratio in the F₂ generation. Nature's spicy surprises!

Zamora. The Land of Birds and Waterfalls, and home to this incredible Capsicum pubescens. These Rocoto Amarillo we found there crushed it this season. Even after Georgia’s brutally hot, dry summer, they’re loaded with fruit. Absolute juice bombs.

How To Cage Peppers For Maximum Yield — For Cheap!

This pepper plant is taller than me… and it’s pumping out fruit like crazy — all because of a $6 cage I built in minutes.
No fancy garden store gear. No overpriced trellises. Just one simple trick that keeps your peppers standing tall and boosts your yield.

If you’ve ever had a plant snap under its own weight, this one’s going to save your harvest.
