Today SiriusXM Real Jazz honors legendary flute player Hubert Laws with a two hour special.

Mark Ruffin hosts with music from the NEA Jazz Master including: tracks he made with his childhood friends the Jazz Crusaders, plus one of the very few recordings of Laws playing tenor sax, and with love from John Beasley, a short conversation about the songs his college friend Chick Corea wrote specifically for him.

Jack DeJohnette (1942-2025) Rest In Peace

Real Jazz is sad to announce the death of the legendary NEA Jazz Master drummer Jack DeJohnette.

Mark Ruffin has a two-hour tribute to Jack today at 3 pm ET/Noon PT, with the late encore at 1am ET/ 10 pm Pacific.

Kurt Elling joins Mark Ruffin on the SiriusXM R3eal Jazz Jam Session tomorrow at 3pm ET/Noon PT and Midnight ET/9 pm PT

These two go way back to before Kurt was signed to Blue Note Records in the 80's. So while Hadestown is Mr. Elling's Broadway debut, Mark has seen him on a few theatrical endeavors including with the Steppenwolf Theatre, the Tyego Dance Project and at the Von Freeman weekly jam sessions which is where they met.

These two old friends discuss the past and the International Jazz Day celebration in Chicago which was initiated by Kurt.

Last night The Gilmore introduced the Larry J. Bell Award which is now the largest monetary prize in jazz. The first winner of the $300,000 prize was announced last night in New York City with the winner being Sullivan Fortner.

In addition to a performance by Mr. Fortner, the secret panel was revealed which included SiriusXM Real Jazz host Mark Ruffin who also interviewed the winner.
