"While I very much continue to believe in the importance of the recognition of human rights, the way the US government has weaponized human rights I think is deeply counterproductive to the overarching project of trying to push for countries to actually base their policy on recognition and respect."

"Not only did sanctions harm the populations and consolidate the control of the government, they also undermine US interests in the long term."

A US News & World Report piece is framed: “AI Data Center Construction Brings a New Wave of NIMBYs.” The piece offers zero evidence that people fighting data centers in their communities would be happy with it in someone else’s backyard. Maybe they are self-interested *and* public-minded. Maybe they see their lives as connected with those of others. Maybe they think if they have to be canaries in this particular coalmine, they’re going to do it, without letting media tut-tutting distract or deter them.

Data centers are very much brick and mortar—despite press coverage that suggests that artificial intelligence all happens in the ether somewhere.

Just because someone lied under oath about using racial slurs dozens of times doesn't mean they should be canceled—and by "canceled," we mean given their own TV show.

After Mark Fuhrman became a symbol of a divided America, it's quite telling that the disgraced cop later found a landing place on Fox News.

You almost have to abandon your understanding of what words mean to put a toe in news media’s foreign policy conversation. And then accept that things will be presented in terms of who might or should achieve “total and complete victory,” or else a “humiliating defeat” – as if we weren’t talking about the lives of millions of human beings, and the trajectory of their political futures, rather than two Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots.

Why is the US at war with Iran? What is the hoped-for outcome? Who is hoping for it? And what of the millions who got something they didn’t hope for?

"This is a situation that the Trump administration, starting with secretary of state/national security advisor/archivist Marco Rubio, says is entirely the fault of the Venezuelan government and their flawed economic socialist policies, when of course it’s quite obvious that any island that is reliant on outside fuel for its energy sector would be suffering in the way that Cuba is now, with these massive blackouts that, of course, have a huge impact on the population, and on basic services in the country."

"You have so many media outlets in the US that just don't provide the basic context of what US/Cuba policy has been for decades."

"Conservative politicians and their ultra-rich donors are infusing money into universities to create, essentially, conservative think tanks. And the goal, I believe, and I think we have a lot of evidence to support this, is to take the core curriculum out of the College of Liberal Arts, and to place it within these new Schools of Civic Leadership, which have as their mission 'advancing the value of Western civilization and the importance of the American idea.'

"In other words, they think that the College of Liberal Arts at places like UT is far too 'woke.' And so conservatives are better equipped to teach in a more disinterested way. Of course, it's not actually disinterested. It's promoting a white supremacist view of culture and history."

"Conservative politicians and their ultra-rich donors are infusing money into universities to create, essentially, conservative think tanks."

Local media have fanned the misconception that these are anti-Jewish protests, meant to intimidate Jewish worshippers attending synagogue, when in fact they are pro-Palestine protests against illegal land sales that are strategically held inside a house of worship.

The press entertained the notion that any condemnation of Israel that happens within earshot of a synagogue must be rooted in anti-Jewish sentiment.

The Texas legislature passed Senate Bill 37 in 2025, shifting decision-making power on questions around curricula and degree requirements from faculty to political appointees, in a way described as unprecedented. On May 20, students at the University of Texas at Austin staged a mock funeral, including a horse-drawn hearse, in protest of the death of academic freedom. You may not have heard much about SB 37 and its impact on education in Texas, but you can guess that the people doing what they’re doing in Texas don’t plan for it to stop there.

While students and teachers think higher education means engagement with a range of perspectives, right-wing politicians say "not so fast."

“'Sportswashing' is when political leaders use sports to deflect attention from chronic social problems and human rights woes at home, to try to make themselves look important or legitimate on the world stage, to try to burnish their own individual reputation or the country's reputation, while also setting up opportunities for political and economic gain."

"The FIFA World Cup provides us with a chance to actually come together for real, and defend our communities against an invading force that is FIFA."
