In the 1930s, in Key West, Florida, a radiology technician named Carl Tanzler met a beautiful young woman that would haunt his every waking moment… even after death.
Her name was Maria Elena Milagro de Hoyos. She was just 21. A Cuban-American beauty with dark hair, soft eyes, and a tragic diagnosis: tuberculosis.
Tanzler—who fancied himself a "Count" and believed he was guided by visions was working at the hospital where Elena was being treated. From the moment he saw her, he was convinced she was the woman from his dreams, the one destined to be his soulmate. But Elena? She didn’t feel the same.
She was polite, maybe a little indifferent,
and very very sick. Still, Tanzler was obsessed. He showered her with gifts, tried bizarre "cures", and also pledged undying love for her.
But none of it mattered. In 1931, Elena passed away. She was buried in a mausoleum… one that Tanzler himself paid for, and crucially, was the only one with the keys.
