The Church Studio stands on land originally owned by Creek Nation citizen Alvin T. Hodge, which was part of the Muscogee Creek Nation’s settlement in Tulsa after the Trail of Tears. The Creek people established "Tallasi," believed to be the origin of Tulsa's name. Just eight minutes west of the studio is the historic Council Oak Tree, where the Creek held a ceremonial meeting in 1836 to mark the start of their new life in Indian Territory.*

Take a look at this 1915 map and if you look closely, you'll see a star on the land where The Church Studio stands.

Our Story

The church was built in 1915 and started as Grace M.E. Church. It was converted to a world-class recording studio in 1972 by Grammy-Award winning musician, singer, songwriter, and producer Leon Russell. Once the historic renovation is complete, the beautiful structure will once again become a recording studio, community space and home to the Church Studio Archive. Today, The Church Studio is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Landmark.

The Church Studio Music Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, supports the understanding, appreciation, and advancement of music.

OBJECTIVES OF MISSION


  • Propel Legacy of Leon Russell
