Larry Hosford (1943–2016) was a singer and songwriter in the Americana and honky-tonk scenes, known for his humor, storytelling, and ties to California’s Central Coast. Born in Salinas, California, he began performing in the early 1960s and was often compared to Willie Nelson for his vocal style and songwriting.

In the 1970s, he signed with Leon Russell’s Shelter Records and released two albums: A.K.A. Lorenzo (1975) and Cross Words (1976). These albums featured songs like "Everything's Broken Down" and “Loving You Like I Do.”

Carney Fest, our annual festival, draws its name from Leon Russell's third solo album, "Carney," released in 1972. Billboard described Russell's album as a "slightly off-beat surprise" and pointed out the parallels between Russell's life and an old-fashioned carnival. We found the name "Carney Fest" to be the perfect tribute to Leon and his enduring legacy in Tulsa. www.carneyfest.com

George Harrison says he spontaneously wrote “Here Comes the Sun” in the presence of Eric Clapton while they were strolling around Clapton’s estate, one beautiful spring morning in 1969. But despite the idyllic setting for the creation of that hit, Harrison’s life was in turmoil at the time. His mother had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer, he had infamously quit and rejoined The Beatles, and had recently been arrested for drug possession. So, while he could have just as easily penned a tune about doom and gloom, we’re fortunate that when the sun came out that day, Harrison saw it and said, “It’s alright.”

Our Story

The church was built in 1915 and started as Grace M.E. Church. It was converted to a world-class recording studio in 1972 by Grammy-Award winning musician, singer, songwriter, and producer Leon Russell. Once the historic renovation is complete, the beautiful structure will once again become a recording studio, community space and home to the Church Studio Archive. Today, The Church Studio is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Landmark.

The Church Studio Music Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, supports the understanding, appreciation, and advancement of music.
