Music History Minute

Paul McCartney strongly objected to Phil Spector’s orchestral treatment of “The Long and Winding Road.” He even sent a letter demanding changes but the version still appeared on Let It Be. The dispute later became one of the reasons Paul cited in his lawsuit against the other Beatles and manager Allen Klein.

Teresa Knox recently had the honor of sitting down with May Pang for the Church Studio Legends series.

May is an important part of music history and was with John Lennon during what’s often referred to as his "Lost Weekend;" 1973-1975.

You'll enjoy first hand stories and perspective that only someone who lived it can offer. If you love music history, this conversation is worth watching.

Watch the full interview below.

Bekka Bramlett, the daughter of Bonnie and Delaney Bramlett of the group "Delaney and Bonnie" enjoying the acoustics of the Live Room, giving a shoutout to our very own Ronnie.

Leon was a key collaborator with Delaney & Bonnie, playing guitar and piano, arranging music, and helping them form their famous "Friends" band, which attracted stars like Eric Clapton and George Harrison so it's been very special for Bekka spending time with us, leaning into her heritage.

Steve Ripley would have been 76 today.
Seven years without him, and we still feel his impact

A New Year’s baby who never stopped being creative and innovative

From Charlene Ripley’s collection ; here he is with his friend and client Clarence “Gatemouth”Brown…a moment that says so much about who Steve was and the relationships he built.

We miss him. His influence is still very much part of this place.

Happy heavenly birthday, Steve.

In 2025, to mark Shure Microphones’ 100th anniversary, The Church Studio partnered with Shure to present Century of Sound, a special exhibition celebrating 100 years of audio innovation. The exhibit features historic microphones that helped shape music, broadcasting, and live performance.

Special thanks to Michael Echart and Highway Marketing for helping bring this exhibition to life.

Our Story

The church was built in 1915 and started as Grace M.E. Church. It was converted to a world-class recording studio in 1972 by Grammy-Award winning musician, singer, songwriter, and producer Leon Russell. Once the historic renovation is complete, the beautiful structure will once again become a recording studio, community space and home to the Church Studio Archive. Today, The Church Studio is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Landmark.

The Church Studio Music Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, supports the understanding, appreciation, and advancement of music.
