Lafayette Officer Placed on Leave After Viral Arrest Video

LAFAYETTE, La. — A Lafayette Police officer has been placed on paid administrative leave while the department investigates an incident in which the officer was recorded appearing to slam a young man to the ground during an arrest.

Police Chief Paul Trouard confirmed Friday that the officer is the subject of an Internal Affairs investigation stemming from the September 12 incident. The young man involved was reportedly 16 years old.

The Lafayette Police Department received a formal complaint from the teenager’s mother on September 15th. Trouard said the department reviewed the video to verify its authenticity before opening the investigation, and the case was formally assigned to Internal Affairs on September 16th.

“I’ve looked at the video Tuesday to make sure it wasn’t AI, just to confirm this actually happened,” Trouard said, according to The Acadiana Advocate.

Trouard said state law establishes deadlines for the Internal Affairs process, including 14 days for the chief to determine whether an investigation will be opened and 75 days for investigators to complete the case once authorized.

The chief said he could not discuss specific findings while the investigation remains active, but the teenager’s mother will be notified of the final disposition.

NAACP Raises Broader Concerns

The Internal Affairs investigation comes as the NAACP Lafayette branch is also asking city officials to address broader concerns regarding the department’s use of force.

Branch President Ravis Martinez sent a September 15th letter to Mayor President Monique Boulet and Chief Trouard requesting a meeting within 14 days to discuss what he described as concerns involving training, supervision, policy, accountability and department culture.

Martinez said his concerns extend beyond the video involving the teenager and include use of force complaints that he said do not always become public.

“The question for me is: what is Lafayette’s use of force data telling us about what’s happening across the entire department?” Martinez said.

In response, Lafayette Police announced three mandatory measures: expanded de-escalation retraining, weekly random supervisory audits of body worn camera footage and revisions to the department’s use of force policy concerning officers who fail to intervene when another officer crosses the line.

Trouard said de-escalation training has been part of the department’s training efforts for several years.

The Lafayette Police Department maintains an Internal Affairs division and has a formal process for investigating complaints against officers.

Martinez said he is awaiting a response to the NAACP’s request for a meeting. The 14 day window outlined in his letter expires September 29th.

The investigation into the September 12th incident remains ongoing.

Smith County Prepares for Halloween Flock Camera Apocalypse

SMITH COUNTY, Texas — With reports circulating that large numbers of residents may dress up for Halloween and take advantage of the costumes to destroy Flock style surveillance cameras, Smith County officials have reportedly developed a solution they believe will protect the county's growing camera inventory.

The plan is simple: install two additional Flock style cameras behind every existing camera.

According to officials, the first additional camera will be positioned to record anyone attempting to destroy the original camera. The second will be positioned to record anyone attempting to destroy the camera that was installed to protect the original camera.

“We are focused on effective policing, and preservation of our Flock inventory is our number one priority during the Halloween season,” one Smith County official told AE Radio reporters.

“And these things are expensive. At $3,000 a pop and with more than a hundy on our roads, we have to do everything in our power to protect them,” he continued.

Officials reportedly acknowledged that some residents may eventually figure out that destroying the third camera would simply result in the county installing two more cameras behind that one, but said the department is prepared for what it called a “potentially endless camera based escalation.”

“We've run the numbers,” the official said. “If they destroy one camera, we'll install two. If they destroy those two, we'll install four. If they destroy those four, we'll install eight.”

At that point, officials reportedly expect the average Smith County roadway to contain approximately 17 cameras, three utility poles, two generators and one very confused pedestrian.

“We're calling it the Flock Defense Initiative,” the official said. “Eventually, there will be so many cameras that nobody will know which one they're supposed to destroy.”

Officials say the ultimate goal is to reach a point where Halloween traffic enforcement consists primarily of cameras watching other cameras watching other cameras.

And if nothing else, officials say, Smith County will finally have enough surveillance footage to determine exactly who keeps stealing the damn cameras.

Former Lufkin Bank CEO Accused of Misappropriating $167,000 From Trust

LUFKIN, Texas — A former Lufkin community bank executive is facing felony charges after investigators say he misappropriated approximately $167,000 from a trust account he had been appointed to oversee and later assaulted a person who reported the alleged financial misconduct.

Richard Keith Jones, 55, former CEO of Angelina Savings Bank, is charged with misapplication of fiduciary property between $150,000 and $300,000 and assault of a family member.

According to an Angelina County Sheriff’s Office affidavit, the investigation began in May 2025 after the FBI forwarded a tip alleging money had been taken from a trust established by a father for his son before the father died in 2015.

Jones and another longtime friend of the father were appointed to oversee the trust until the son reached age 40. Investigators say the son did not have direct access to the account and instead had to request that money be transferred to his personal checking account when needed.

After Jones left Angelina Savings Bank in 2024, the trust was moved to BOM Bank. Around the same time, the son was reportedly warned by someone close to Jones that there may have been unauthorized activity involving the account.

Investigators subpoenaed records from multiple financial institutions and identified numerous transactions the son considered suspicious, including transfers involving a family account and a check made payable to Lumberjack Harley-Davidson. The son told investigators he had never owned a motorcycle.

The investigation initially identified more than $512,000 in transfers between 2018 and 2022 from an associated family account, prompting additional reviews of financial records.

According to the affidavit, Jones voluntarily met with investigators in October 2025. During a recorded interview, he acknowledged taking money from the trust without authorization. Investigators ultimately determined that approximately $167,000 had been taken from the trust for personal gain between 2015 and 2024, according to the affidavit.

Alleged retaliation

A separate investigation began August 12th, 2026, when deputies responded to a residence on Providence Road after the person who initially reported the alleged financial misconduct said Jones confronted and assaulted them.

The caller told deputies Jones grabbed them by the neck and shoved them into a wall. Deputies reportedly documented marks on the caller's neck, shoulder and lower back, along with an injured wrist.

According to the affidavit, the caller believed the confrontation was connected to their report to law enforcement regarding the trust.

The affidavit also notes a history of violence between Jones and the caller.

Jones was booked into the Angelina County Jail Thursday on the financial and assault charges.

The allegations contained in the affidavits are not findings of guilt, and Jones is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

Shreveport Man Arrested Following Investigation Involving Two Children

SHREVEPORT, La. — Bruce Johnson Jr., 39, has been arrested by Shreveport Police following an investigation involving two children, ages 12 and 13.

According to police, both children participated in forensic interviews at the Gingerbread House, where they disclosed details of the alleged abuse.

An arrest warrant for Johnson was issued September 14th. He surrendered to authorities at the Caddo Correctional Center on September 15th.

He is charged with two counts of indecent behavior with a juvenile and one count of sexual battery.

The investigation remains ongoing. Johnson is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

Sarepta Man Arrested in Juvenile S*x Case

SAREPTA, La. — A 24 year old Sarepta man is being held in the parish prison following an investigation into allegations of sexual activity involving a 13 year old juvenile, according to Webster Parish Sheriff Jason Parker.

Tristan Colter Davis was arrested Thursday and charged with felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile.

According to Sheriff Parker, deputies responded to a Sarepta residence following a complaint regarding an alleged incident reported to have occurred Tuesday, September 8. Statements from family members and the juvenile reportedly identified Davis as the person involved.

Davis was later questioned at the Webster Parish Sheriff’s Office with assistance from investigators, and authorities said he provided statements that implicated him in the alleged incident.

Davis is being held without bail at the Bayou Dorcheat Correctional Center.

The allegations remain under investigation. Davis is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
