BY FAITH SERIES OF DEVOTION BREAK
GOD'S MESSAGE FOR YOU:
I believe that this is Christian's favorite Bible story; this story is about David and Goliath. He fought the giant using his sling and stone; he doesn't use the sword, and yet he used it at the end of the battle, where he cut the giant's head off. To share this story, let's elaborate on how David slew the giant.
David, son of Jesse, a Bethlehemite, is the youngest among eight sons. His three eldest brothers are soldiers to Saul; their names are Eliab, Abinadab, and Shammah. David is a shepherd; he goes out to his brothers' camp to deliver their food. When they were about to fight against the Philistines, there was a giant who appeared named Goliath. Everyone was afraid, and they retreated. Eliab heard when David spoke to his men, and he got angry because he left his work as a shepherd and because he knows what to do to defeat them, but David said, "What have I done now? Is there not a cause?" Eliab turned them toward each other and spoke with his men in the same manner.
They brought David to Saul because David knew that he could defeat the giant through his faith in God. But Saul rejected him because he was young and he was just a shepherd. But David shared that he fought the lion and a bear when they were about to attack his flocks; the strength that he used to fight a lion and a bear came from the Lord. Later, Saul accepted him and gave him armor, a shield, and a sword, but David couldn't carry those because they were too heavy, so he went out and chose five smooth stones out of the brook and put them in his bag, and he used his sling.
Now, he came to face the battle against the Philistines. Goliath appeared and mocked David and the Lord. David had courage, for the Lord was with him. He grabbed the sling and took the stone in his bag and slung it at Goliath. When the giant fell down, David ran and took the sword; he pulled out the sheath, and he cut the giant's head off. The Philistines feared and fled away, and the men of Jerusalem and Judah shouted and pursued them until they came to the valley. David took the head of a Philistine and brought it to Saul, and he asked, "Whose son is this?" Saul was amazed by David, for he fought the giant even though he was young.
This story shows David's faith in God over fear. He never relies on his fear, and he credits his strength to the Lord. This world is full of Goliaths; we need more Davids in times of trouble, frailties, and storms. David was mentioned in the book of Matthew; he is the great-great-grandson of Rahab, the harlot, and he is one of the lineage of Jesus Christ. David, a shepherd boy who became a king of Israel, you may also read about in the book of Psalms where he wrote his poems and songs. He is also known as "The Man after God's own heart."
I remember this quote: Let your faith be greater than your fears. In times of trouble, have faith in God; when the storms of life are raging, stand by Him; when life goes down, pray! Be like David when facing the giants. Remember, you have God, who is greater than the giant. Ask God for strength because He only provides, and our strength is in the Lord, not ours, so rely on Him.
THE GRACE OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST BE WITH YOU ALL. AMEN
(Romans 16:24).
