SILENCE! The Musical closes Saturday. Tap-dancing lambs wait for no one.

Somebody watched The Silence of the Lambs and thought it needed a chorus line. They were right. Street Theatre Company’s parody runs 90 minutes, no intermission, 18 and up, crude on purpose.

Ethiopia has been doing this for six hundred years and the rest of us have been catching up ever since. Beans roasted dark, brewed strong, and if you ask about the traditional ceremony you will get the whole thing: the roasting, the incense, three rounds poured from a jebena, and a conversation you did not schedule. Fall Break is dead and gone. Bury it this Halloween seasonwith a biscuit at Nashville Biscuit House.

Monday is here for you and there is no stopping it. What you can do is sit down on Gallatin Avenue first, get a biscuit so tender it barely survives the trip from plate to mouth, and let somebody refill your coffee twice before anybody asks you a single question.

The gravy is made by hands that have done it ten thousand times and never once phoned it in.

Halloween isn't here yet, but Thanksgiving is coming and so is your mother-in-law. Go get the rug.

You've been looking at that bare spot in the living room since spring. In six weeks there will be people standing on it, and in ten weeks there will be more of them. Singers, listen to Amber Mogg Cathey: pain is not progress.

Your voice is an instrument you can't take to a shop. If a note hurts or feels wrong, stop and try it another way. If it still isn't working, go get help instead of pushing through it. "No pain, no gain" belongs in a weight room, not in your throat.

This is a town full of people who sing for a living, or want to, and the ones who last are the ones who take that seriously.

Nobody ever sang better by ignoring the warning signs.
