For the fourth year in a row, we at MIT Sloan Management Review and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) have assembled an international panel of AI experts that includes academics and practitioners to help us understand how responsible artificial intelligence (RAI) is being implemented across organizations worldwide.

In spring 2025, we also fielded a global executive survey yielding 1,221 responses to learn the degree to which organizations are addressing responsible AI. In our most recent article, we explored the relationship between explainability and human oversight in holding AI systems accountable.

This time, we dive deeper into accountability for agentic AI. Although there is no agreed-upon definition, agentic AI generally refers to AI systems that are capable of pursuing goals autonomously by making decisions, taking actions, and adapting to dynamic environments without constant human oversight.

According to MIT's AI Agent Index, deployment of these systems is increasing across fields like software engineering and customer service despite limited transparency about their technical components, intended uses, and safety.
Given the apparent governance gap, we asked our panel to react to the following provocation. Holding agentic AI accountable for its decisions and actions requires new management approaches.

Having impostor thoughts — often called impostor syndrome or the impostor phenomenon — is simply an employee’s belief that others overestimate their abilities at work. Leaders can learn to avoid three common missteps in managing people experiencing such thoughts, as well as how to help employees cope by emphasizing impostor thoughts’ cognitive origin, their prevalence among peers, and people’s ability to self-manage those thoughts.

Political uncertainty is hitting businesses worldwide. Companies are delaying investments, postponing launches, and deferring decisions as they navigate unpredictable trade policies and political shifts. But a wait-and-see approach isn’t always wise — it can mean missed opportunities or existential threats. Leaders must learn when waiting does and does not make strategic sense. For leaders who choose to wait, success requires three elements: active disengagement, political sensemaking, and preparations to rapidly reengage.

Artificial intelligence does not change anything about the fundamental nature of sustained competitive advantage when its use is pervasive. Once AI’s use is ubiquitous, it will transform economies and lift markets as a whole, but it will not uniquely benefit any single company. Businesses seeking to gain an innovation edge over rivals will need to focus their efforts on cultivating creativity among their employees.

Many organizations’ efforts to foster meritocracy may, paradoxically, deepen inequities. In this excerpt from Emilio J. Castilla’s new book, The Meritocracy Paradox, he discusses a strategic talent analytics approach that can help organizations identify and eliminate bias and inefficiencies in hiring, promotion, and rewards decisions. Systematically collecting and analyzing data on demographics, hiring processes, and outcomes can help give everyone an equal opportunity to compete and succeed.

Leaders can use analytics to help identify bias, target inefficiencies, and support merit-based hiring and promotions.

Tightening immigration policies worldwide are disrupting multinational enterprises’ ability to recruit global R&D talent for colocated teams. Research shows that the innovation output of dispersed teams is lower than that of colocated teams, but companies can adapt using four strategic approaches: immigration arbitrage, modularization, flexible orchestration, and regional ecosystem integration. These strategies can help teams maintain innovation excellence while navigating mobility constraints. https://mitsmr.com/4pmi47x

A long-term, coordinated strategic talent management approach is a powerful mechanism in facilitating talent mobility and deployment, which can increase engagement and reduce turnover. But organizational success requires the commitment of leaders across functions. Researchers share a novel talent management model that can help companies identify ineffective talent leadership behaviors, as well as five interventions to strengthen team leaders’ commitment to managing talent.

Our model describes four different talent management approaches along two key dimensions: leaders’ strategic depth (tactical or strategic) and the scope of their impact (within their own team or across the entire organization). https://mitsmr.com/3JTMugX

Leaders should consider neuroinclusion as a strategic capability-building opportunity rather than a diversity initiative. Ten-plus years of neuroinclusion initiatives at major companies have yielded significant business value beyond just filling open positions.
