RIP Carl Carlton (1953–2025) 🕊️

Sad news to hear that Detroit-born Carl Carlton has passed away at 72. From Grammy-nominated funk to underground soul classics, his career spanned decades.

While many know him for timeless hits like Everlasting Love and the funk anthem She’s A Bad Mama Jama, on Northern Soul dancefloors his legacy runs even deeper. Dancers know the power of “Competition Ain’t Nothing” and “I Can Feel It” — massive sounds perfect for the dance floor. 🖤🎶

First known as Little Carl Carlton, his voice carried urgency, soul and grit — qualities that resonated deeply with our scene, where his music found a second life and eternal respect.

RIP Carl. Your music still moves us — and we’ll keep spinning your tunes.

The Brighouse Ritz has gone, but the memories live forever.

Really gutted to see the flames engulfing the Ritz. For many of us it wasn’t just a venue — it was where friendships were made and the floor shook with Northern Soul. And it was where Soul Brew first began in 2014, when its founders first met on soul nights out.

The Ritz holds many memories, laughter, sweat, tunes and togetherness. The building may be gone, but the soul it gave us lives on.

As Soul Brew continues our regular Brighouse Sunday soul sessions at Jeremy's at the Boat House and look ahead to the new second-Sunday “Soulie Grail” events at the beautifully refurbished Brighouse Civic Hall- just around the corner, we’ll carry the spirit of the Ritz with us — the music, the community, the soul it gave us. Remembering Steve Cropper (1941–2025) • RIP

Sad news for the soul world — legendary guitarist, songwriter and soul icon Steve Cropper has died in Nashville aged 84.

Cropper’s subtle, soulful, absolutely unmistakable guitar playing helped define the Stax sound. As a key member of Booker T. & the MGs, the Stax house band, he co-wrote and played on some of the greatest records ever cut: “Green Onions,” “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay,” “In the Midnight Hour” and many more.

“Green Onions” alone — that raw, rolling groove he created with Booker T., Duck Dunn and Al Jackson Jr. — still fills dance floors the second the needle drops. A true soul anthem, and a testament to Steve’s genius.

Rest easy, Steve. The groove lives on ❤️ 🙌🎶
