I grew up in Sydney, Australia in a family that never went camping or on outdoors adventures. Therefore, it came as somewhat of a surprise to discover bushwalking and camping in

my mid 20′s and it fast became somewhat of an obsession. Since then, I’ve become a leader with the Sydney Bush Walkers Club and the Bushwalkers Wilderness Rescue Squad, an affiliate squad of the Volunteer Rescue Association. The outdoors totally changed my life and I’m keen to share my knowledge and stories with others – hoping that they’ll catch the bug too! When I’m not out in the bush, I can be found running a Production and Consultancy company based in Sydney, shooting in remote and logistically tricky locations such as jungles, volcanoes and on the high seas. You can email me at [email protected]. In July 2013, as an avid user of their products for over 10 years, I was delighted to be appointed a Macpac Ambassador.

I'm not usually one for the whole survivalist schtick, so I took some convincing to watch "Alone" on SBS. It was fascinating for so many reasons, but what I love most is observing different approaches to nature. I've always been put off by the agressive approach that portrays nature and wildness as something that needs conquering, so was delighted to find so many other approaches in this show and how each person handled the challenges differently. Needless to say, Jose was one of my favourites. Q: Have you watched it? What were your takeaways?

Are you a fan of podcasts? I love them for long drives to walking spots or those dreary city drives stuck in traffic. When they can transport you to the bush and adventure, through conversation with interesting people. I was stoked to find my new favourite with Jen Brown. Q: What's your favourite outdoorsy podcast?

I love podcasts. It's like the radio genie heard about my love for the ABC Conversations (and it's forebear, Margaret Throsby) and decided to open the doors to millions of such great conversations, from all around

Swipe ➡️ // A still and silent start across the Jamison Valley today: the sun nudged the out of its slumber, as the warmth from above, held down the chilly winters night below; where lyrebirds and black cockatoos awoke.

Do you hammock? I've got to admit, I'm pretty hammock-curious, so was keen to chat with the lovely Sarah Macdonald and Mandy Roberts from about hammocking. It's a thing! Q: I'd love to hear about your experiences with a hammock, if you love em or loathe em...

Camping doesn't have to be about sleeping on the ground. Hammock Hiking gets you up off the earth for a cosy night. But there's a few tricks to be aware of.

Hiking beside the stunning Delatite River, near Mt Buller, you can link up a number of different trails to reach the summit of Mt Stirling, with stunning views across to sunset over Mt Buller. It's a long, slow ascent to the top, but through the diverse habitats of snowgums and woolly butt trees, the time passes quickly. Take everything you need and be prepared for all types of weather as it can change quickly up here!

When the ground is rock solid, sleeping fly only (no tent inner) and wanting airflow, the ol’ marines motto came to mind: Improvise, adapt and overcome. Q: What’s your hard ground solution? (Cue smug hammockers, free-standers and bivvy-ers 😁).

Swipe ➡️ // Out with volunteers learning how a grassroots organisation cares for place and educates visitors to some of the most loved natural areas near Canyonlands and Arches NP’s, Utah. Check out my article in the latest (200th edition) to learn about this and other strategies land managers across Utah, Colorado, Wyoming and other US states developed to manage visitation impacts. Food for thought for us in AU as more of us realise the power of, and human need for, connection to nature.
