“There were points in time where I honestly thought about stopping the sport,” Agi said. “There’s just a mental toll that being in physical pain brings on you, and also being in such a high-level gym and not being able to play.”

But in the face of a mountain of adversity, Agi climbed past it, making her long-awaited return to the court in LBSU’s season opener against Stanford – a whopping 643 days from her last match.

Manager of Branch Services Cynthia Bautista and her team launched “Vida Latina” in 2019 at the Billie Jean King Main Library with a total of eight programs.

Bautista said because of its success, they have expanded the celebration to all branches and formed a committee to plan a full month of events.

“This year’s theme—Unity and Herencia—celebrates coming together to honor the roots, resilience, and cultural connections that unite the community across the Latin(e) diaspora,” said Library, Arts and Culture Department, Public Affairs Assistant Maurina Cintron in the press release. “Through art storytelling, food, and dance, Vida Latina is an opportunity for everyone to reflect on the past, embrace the present, and look toward the future together.”

A power outage hit campus Monday morning, affecting various buildings on upper campus and canceling all daytime classes, according to a campuswide alert.

The power outage that affected areas across campus is believed to have been caused by a water leak near electrical equipment, according to University Statements.

Power has been restored in some areas of upper campus, including the Liberal Arts buildings. Evening classes starting at 5 p.m. will continue as scheduled unless otherwise notified.

With the momentum now firmly in the Aztecs’ favor, LBSU seemed to be fatigued as back-to-back attack errors from freshman middle blocker Sidney Hamaker and King sealed the first set 25-19 for SDSU.

That hiccup did not stop The Beach from striking back with a kill by King with an assist from sophomore setter Madi Maxwell to start the second set off strong.

Lopez honors Mexico at The Beach by wearing number six, the number she was given by the Mexico National Team.

The love and pride of Mexico took over Julie as she wanted to cry while singing Mexico’s national anthem pre-game. Julie explained how her Mexican identity influences her play on the field.

“Passion, I think Mexicans obviously play with a lot of passion, like grit, and seeing my brothers as well and then playing on the national team…you kind of just learn to play like that and I think that influenced my game a lot,” Lopez said.

‘90s set thriller “Plainclothes,” directed by first-time feature film director and writer Carmen Emmi, debuted earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival where it won the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Ensemble Cast.

Starring Tom Blyth and Russel Tovey, the film about an undercover police officer entrapping gay men while grappling with his own sexuality will screen at the Art Theatre on Retro Row on Thursday, Sept. 4 at 9 p.m as part of the Long Beach QFilm Festival.

The Current spoke with Emmi about his writing process, Sundance and the Long Beach connection that first sparked his imagination.

The Beach and Toreros defensive intensity combined for 14 fouls in the first half. However, it led to no real offensive threats for either side as LBSU junior goalkeeper Aurora Schuck and USD junior goalkeeper Ilise Medrano had a combined zero saves to end the first half.

The Beach finally got one in the back of the net after a cleared freekick led to a floating shot from LBSU junior midfielder Jordan Candelaria just outside the box, hitting off the crossbar and landing in front of a perfectly placed junior forward Cherrie Cox for the tap in lead-taking goal in the 71st minute.

“Our whole team got robbed from the first goal off the crossbar,” Cox said. “So at least someone had to make sure to get on, I know I wasn’t the only one crashing the box, we wanted to win.”
