BREAKING NEWS: COMELEC SEALS DUTERTE YOUTH DISQUALIFICATION

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) issues a Certificate of Finality and Entry of Judgment on the disqualification of Duterte Youth Party-list today, September 30.

This complies with the 30-day rule for Duterte Youth to appeal in the Supreme Court and secure a temporary restraining order (TRO) against the poll body's August 29 en banc ruling. The high court has not acted upon the party-list's Motion for Reconsideration since its September 3 filing.

This finalizes the nullification of Duterte Youth's registration, which stemmed from a 2019 complaint from youth groups over its circumvention of election guidelines. The COMELEC Second Division earlier ruled in favor of the petitioners on June 18.

Brell Lacerna, Kabataan, Tayo ang Pag-asa (KTAP) National Convenor, meanwhile asserts that the resolution is just the tip of the iceberg. "COMELEC must never let this happen again in the near future. It can only do so if it will address reported anomalies during the May 2025 polls and upend its guidelines to break the cycle of political dynasties bastardizing the party-list system," Lacerna stated.

BREAKING NEWS: Several youth detainees mass arrested during the September 21 anti-corruption rallies are set to be released today, September 25.

In a presser, Atty. Josalee Deinla of the National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) stated that the order covers those who underwent inquest proceedings before Atty. Lester Jay Allan Flores II on September 24, or three days after the arrests.

The Office of the City Prosecutor of Manila ruled out that their continued detention violated the 36-hour rule under Article 125 of the Revised Penal Code. Earlier, lawyers from NUPL, Public Interest Law Center (PILC), SENTRA, and PLACE filed a motion before the office to release all detained youth, citing the reason beforehand.

NUPL member-lawyers are currently stationed at the Manila Police District Headquarters, Police Station 2 (Moriones), Police Station 4 (Balik-Balik), and Police Station 14 (Barbosa) to assist with the release process.

Meanwhile, UP Diliman student and volunteer paralegal Matthew Wovi Villanueva was released this afternoon from Police Station 13 (Del Pan) after posting bail of PhP 36,000 for four trumped-up charges--violation of the BP 880, Revised Penal Code articles 146 (illegal assembly), 151 (serious disobedience), and 153 (tumults and other disturbances).

According to Villanueva, the arbitrary arrests, brutal harassment of the police, child abuse, delayed inquests and disregard of detainee rights exposes an unjust system that protects corrupt officials in power, contradicting to police claims that they were unarmed and peaceful throughout the mass arrests.

According to Bagong Alyansang Makabayan, after the program in Mendiola last September 21, police began throwing tear gas canisters, leading to hours of clashes with protesters that resulted in one confirmed death.

Rights groups continue to demand the release of all detainees, totaling more than 200 individuals, majority were minors.

NOW: Students trooped to the House of Representatives to demand a higher budget to state universities and colleges (SUCs) coinciding with SUCs budget deliberations at the House of Representatives.

UP faces a whopping Php 21 billion budget deficit compared to the proposed Php 4.85 billion budget. Meanwhile, PUP endures a Php 9.01 billion budget deficit, stating that these patterns of budget cuts will not fully resolve the education crisis.

Students also condemned the Marcos administration's bigger allocation of budget on corruption and fascism. "Kinukurakot niyo ang kinabukasan namin," they said.
