A Sioux City man is facing a range of felony and misdemeanor charges following an early morning standoff that ended peacefully on August 8.
According to Sioux City Police, officers were dispatched around 9:30 a.m. to the 2100 block of South St. Mary’s Street for a welfare check on a 19-year-old woman. Authorities say a relative of the woman reported receiving text messages indicating she was being held against her will by her boyfriend, 21-year-old James Gosnell. The messages allegedly stated Gosnell was armed and had threatened to shoot anyone who came to check on her.
Upon arrival, officers attempted to make contact with both Gosnell and the victim but received no response. When police announced they were calling in the SWAT team, Gosnell exited the residence and surrendered without further incident. The woman also came out, showing minor visible injuries. She told officers Gosnell had pushed her to the floor and barricaded her in the bedroom by pushing the bed against the door. She reported that he told her she “couldn’t leave until Monday” and that it “would be her worst day ever.” The woman also informed police that she is pregnant with Gosnell’s child.
Investigators say they were also informed Gosnell had fired multiple rounds in the alley behind the home during the early morning hours the previous day. Police obtained a search warrant for the residence, during which they discovered a handgun with 17 live rounds in its magazine, ten spent casings inside the home, and a 9mm casing in Gosnell’s pocket. A large jar containing 457.5 grams of marijuana—just over a pound—was also found in a closet, along with a scale, baggies, three THC cartridges, and 25 THC v**e pens.
Gosnell was arrested and booked into the Woodbury County Jail. He is facing two felony charges for possession of a controlled substance and failure to affix a drug tax stamp, along with misdemeanor charges of false imprisonment, serious domestic abuse, and reckless use of a firearm. His bond was set at $20,000, which he has since posted.
