I know my Willie Nelson painting has gotten plenty of screen time on my profile, but he needed one last moment with this floral mini tondo I made this summer—because if it’s pink and green together, it’s for me 🤠💖🌱

Another one in the series for Wicked Bess, and we’re dreaming up some more of these to come very soon. Remember to support your local artists and artisans this coming season.

Really proud and excited to share this cover art for the new podcast by Brendan Williams! Brendan is a Maine-based disability advocate and landscape photographer. On his podcast Brendan will interview disability advocates that are working to make the world a better place for folks with disabilities.

“… [my podcast is for people] who want to be inspired and lifted up to go out and become a disability advocate themselves. I want my listeners to feel empowered and inspired to make positive changes for disability rights in their own community.”

Artists are told to niche down. And before I go any further, I’ll acknowledge: I’m not a full-time artist. I do have a full-time creative job and freelance work on top of that, so take this with whatever grain of salt you’d like.

It’s true that you don’t need to know how to draw to be a graphic designer. You definitely don’t need to paint. Learning materials and how to work with them is time-consuming, messy, and yes, it can be expensive.

But I get so much out of my painting and drawing practices that I can bring back to design. Composition, color, negative space—painting and drawing teach you so much about design, and design teaches you so much about drawing painting. A rising-tide-lifts-all-boats approach isn’t for everyone, and this could be a neurodivergent thing, but it’s always been my default mode (and we all have to learn to work with ourselves).

And honestly? Even though I love love my tech, it never hurts to step away from the computer 😉

Will and I worked together at my first real serving job in Cambridge. He was the calmest, coolest expediter you could ever meet — a cool voice of reason telling me to slow down and take it one thing at a time (and honestly, I needed to hear it, even if I never listened). He’s an incredibly talented hospitality professional among many things, and the love and respect I have for him is taller than the end-of-night ticket stack.

Ten years later, he’s running his own company, Wicked Bess, crafting incredible shrubs and pairing them with original cocktail recipes. I was really honored when he asked me to collaborate on this project to create a series of portraits of some women that he’s found inspirational. We’ve been going back and forth on these designs for months, and I’m so happy with what we came up with.

Each coaster features one of Will’s cocktails and the woman who inspired it: Maya Angelou, Josephine Baker, Ella Fitzgerald, and Frida Kahlo. They’re currently in production and will be available soon in the Wicked Bess online shop and at his market pop-ups — including the Boston Public Market. ✨
