English: @ # story 30 years in the making. 🎬🇹🇱
We are incredibly proud to announce a very special project: a new documentary on Timor-Leste's journey to independence, made in close collaboration with the Muzeum Resistensia Timorense and the I-witness film team from Australia.
This isn't just a history lesson. It's a firsthand account from the people who lived it. Our team sat down with the Head of the United Nations mission and its members, the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, and key leaders of the Renetil resistance to hear their stories directly.
But the struggle was fought on many fronts. Our documentary also features the voices of other key leaders who dedicated their lives to the cause:
· Xanana Gusmão – The legendary commander of FALINTIL who led the resistance from the jungles and later from an Indonesian prison cell, becoming the symbol of Timor's fight for freedom.
· José Ramos-Horta – The diplomatic voice of the resistance who travelled the world for over two decades, lobbying at the United Nations and winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1996 for his efforts.
· Mari Alkatiri – A founding member of FRETILIN and key leader in the diplomatic front abroad, who worked tirelessly in exile to build international support for Timor-Leste's independence and later became the country's first Prime Minister.
· Clandestine heroes – The brave men and women, many of them young students, who risked everything in the secret front—smuggling messages, sheltering fighters, and keeping the resistance alive in the cities and villages both inside the country and abroad.
From the struggle in the 70s to the vote for freedom in '99 and the final independence in 2002—this film will capture the pain, the hope, and the ultimate triumph of the Timorese people.
This documentary is generously funded by the Office of the Prime Minister, ensuring that these vital stories are preserved for future generations.
Filming wrapped up last year, and we are currently hard at work in post-production, weaving these powerful testimonies together. We can't wait to share it with you later this year.
Stay tuned for updates. 👀
