Today is a day of celebration in many villages in the alpine regions of central Europe. December 5th is Krampusnacht, translated to english as Krampus Night. Tonight, the companion spirit to St. Nicolas is said to run the streets, taking care of the naughty children on his list. Legends of this dark spirit pre-date Christianity, with tales of the Krampus buried deep in humanities collective consciousness.
