A BCPer’s 24-Day Alaska Flying Adventure

Terry Cross, BCP member CAVU, recently made his dream of flying in Alaska a reality—and shared the journey with the community in a two-part photo-filled trip report:

❝ I’ve always enjoyed reading the good questions, advice, and adventures of everyone here… Now, I have something I’d really like to share.❞

Departing Northern California in their 1975 Cessna U206F Stationair, Terry and his son made the voyage north along Canada's Trench route, then spent the following 3 weeks circumnavigating Alaska. They accomplished impressive coverage of the state, from King Salmon in the south, to Kotzebue on the western shore, and all the way to Deadhorse/Prudhoe Bay on the Arctic Ocean, mostly in unexpected high temperatures in the 80°s and 90°s.

❝ In Talkeetna, we met up with a wonderful man—a master guide and life-long bush pilot who willingly shared his knowledge, enthusiasm, and love for Alaska and its people with us…❞

This trip report is full of both adventure and practical flying insights—from route planning and bush strip landings to unexpected challenges in the North.

Commercial float pilot and author Jake Morrel has released "Hardscrabble Lodge: True Maine Bush Flying Stories," a vivacious and colorful tale of his pursuit of a life in the wilderness of northwest Maine.

What are the most capable but affordable bush planes under $80K USD? Post-pandemic pricing hangover combined with lower inventory, rising prices on maintenance/parts/labor…make a wise decision the first time or get caught holding the bag. We took a stab at compiling some community knowledge and some personal experience to assemble this lengthy guide (ironically, my personal affordable bush plane search continues.)

As usual, this BCP Knowledge Base article is a living document and we WILL update it with suggestions and/or corrections from the community. Thanks.

Finding an affordable aircraft that can handle the backcountry for $80K or less? A challenge for sure, but with the right knowledge and a shrewd approach, it can be done.

Do you ever miss reading a story without the chaotic distractions of the social media experience? I've always enjoyed penning a simple trip report, like that time we flew up to Canada. You can too, join our forum and share your adventures.

Andy and Doug and I had packed the Beaver full to the headliner with film gear and whatever we'd need to survive 4 days at the somewhat remote fishcamp on an airplane-only-access lake in Ontario, Canada. We met at Cook airport, about a 20 minute flig…
