A national security breach of online education platform Canvas shut down the site for Los Altos High School students yesterday. The breach is the second in just a week where hacker group ShinyHunters accessed student information — names, IDs, school emails and direct messages with teachers through the platform. While parent platform Instructure confirmed Canvas is currently safe to use, Director of IT Services Bob Fishtrom advised students and staff to stay skeptical of unfamiliar links they may encounter on the app.

“First thing I tell people: if you don’t know who the sender is, or if it’s too good to be true, don’t click on it,” Fishtrom said.

At 2:41 p.m yesterday, Canvas was shut down for seven hours — a preventative measure taken by the app in response to a security breach. Shortly after, ShinyHunter spread a statement claiming Instructure had five days to comply with demands before affected school’s data would be released.

While many students experienced the Canvas shutdown yesterday, an initial security breach of the platform occurred last Friday, May 1. Fishstrom said he was notified by Instructure, and posted a message on ParentSquare Wednesday that the District was monitoring the situation. In a ransom note released around the same time, ShinyHunters claimed to have accessed more than 275 million users’ data. In previous security breaches, Fishstrom said he’s been advised by the FBI not to comply with demands, as doing so only increases the chances hackers will try again.

While Canvas is also integrated with Aeries — LAHS’s student information systems platform —- Fishtrom said the connection has since been reset to prevent a corresponding security breach. Fishtrom added that sensitive personal information was never stored in Canvas itself in the first place.

“We can tell you with confidence that we do not store passwords in Canvas,” Fishtrom said. “We do not store your birthdate, Social Security number or any financial information. The same goes for teachers.”

Los Altos High School is adopting a new official logo and visual identity. The redesigned logo and accompanying design guide — which includes standardized fonts and colors — are intended to create a more unified and recognizable look across the school’s campus, athletics and social media.

“When people see our new logo, we want them to instantly go, ‘Oh, that’s Los Altos High School,’” Principal Tracey Runeare said.

Despite this sudden change in the middle of the spring semester, the change is tied to the school’s upcoming turf replacement project scheduled for this summer. Administrators wanted the updated eagle logo completed in time to incorporate it on the new field.

One of the primary motivations behind the redesign was the school’s lack of a consistent visual identity. Currently, a wide range of eagle graphics and designs appear around campus and online, many of which lack cohesive elements.

Another key issue was that the former logo — used since 2017 — is not as flexible as the school needs. Assistant Principal Nicolas Betancur said the logo is difficult to use on social media profile pictures and the school website. While it looks strong in large print, it doesn’t scale well.

While LAHS’s website and social media will be updated immediately, administration plans for a gradual transition to the new logo on campus, phasing it in throughout the next couple of years.

“It’s going to take time, but it’s worth it,” Runeare said. “Considering things like timing and affordability will help us make the necessary changes in the right order.”

A couple hundred students walked out of campus this morning, peacefully protesting the U.S. government and ICE. Led by sophomores Tilly Burgart, Lara Tait and Valerie Zhou, the group left Los Altos High School between second period and ACT on Friday, Jan. 30, walking down Almond Avenue and San Antonio Road before pausing at the Downtown Los Altos Plaza.

There, students made speeches and sang songs while passersby in cars honked and cheered in tandem.

“My great-grandfather came from the Philippines and he worked his butt off to get his family in a place to where they could succeed,” junior Quincy McNeal said. “People doing that now are being unjustly persecuted, and people are dying while protecting the right to come to this country. No one in a country that says we promote freedom and liberty should be wrongfully kicked out because of that.”

The group then moved to the side of San Antonio Road in front of the Los Altos City Hall, continuing to chant while facing passing traffic. Students returned to campus during brunch and around the start of fourth period.

Despite the large turnout and organized protest, Tilly said this was all planned just two days ago.

“We spent the entire time since 11 p.m. two nights ago planning and talking and trying to get attention, and this is absolutely amazing,” Tilly said. “We need to show unity for each other’s causes. And if all the minorities come together, we can be bigger than the people trying to put us down.”

For students, it was an opportunity to protest what they believed in.

“Nobody here is an alien; we all belong,” junior Andres Grima said.

The walkout is part of a nationwide movement — “50 Protests, 50 States, 1 Day” — protesting ICE.

The Talon firmly opposes the recent attacks by ICE against innocent civilians.

If you are anti-ICE, it’s time to step up and act anti-ICE. Exercise your First Amendment Rights to protest and speak out for what you believe in. What’s happening in Minneapolis and beyond is inhumane. It’s unconstitutional, and it needs to stop.

We stand with the immigrant community.
