“Inner peace, or mental peace, is the source of all our happiness. Although all living beings have the same basic wish to be happy all the time, very few people understand the real causes of happiness. We usually believe that external conditions such as food, friends, cars and money are the real causes of happiness, and as a result we devote nearly all our time and energy to acquiring them. Superficially it seems that these things can make us happy, but if we look more deeply we will see that they also bring us a lot of suffering and problems.”

“Our body is a visual form that possesses colour and shape, but our mind is a formless continuum that always lacks colour and shape. As explained in Part One, the nature of our mind is empty like space, and its function is to perceive or understand objects. Through this we can understand that our brain is not our mind. The brain is simply a part of our body that, for example, can be photographed, whereas our mind cannot.”

“The practice of Lamrim is very important because everyone needs to cultivate peaceful states of mind. By listening to or reading these teachings we can learn how to control our mind and always keep a good motivation in our heart. This will make all our daily actions pure and meaningful. By controlling our mind we can solve all our daily problems, and by gradually improving our daily practice of Lamrim we can advance from our present stage to the stage of a Bodhisattva. By progressing further we can become a fully enlightened being. This is the essential meaning of our human life. Such a great attainment will be the result of our practice of Lamrim.”

“All Buddha’s teachings are either Sutra, the common teachings, or Ta**ra, the uncommon teachings; there is not a single scripture of Buddha that is not one of these two. Sutra teachings are divided into two types: Hinayana Sutras and Mahayana Sutras. Of these, the Essence of Wisdom Sutra belongs to the category of Mahayana Sutras. The Mahayana Sutras themselves comprise many different types of teaching, but the most precious and supreme are the Perfection of Wisdom Sutras (Skt. Prajnaparamitasutra). Buddha’s ultimate intention is to lead each and every living being to the supreme happiness of enlightenment by showing them the Mahayana path. For this purpose he taught the Perfection of Wisdom Sutras.”

“Today we can see many different forms of Buddhism, such as Zen and Theravada Buddhism. All these different aspects are practices of Buddha’s teachings, and all are equally precious; they are just different presentations. In this book I shall explain about Buddhism according to the Kadampa tradition, which I have studied and practised. This explanation is not given for the purpose of intellectual understanding, but for gaining profound realizations through which we can solve our daily problems of delusions and accomplish the real meaning of our human life.”

“Buddhas have ten special qualities not possessed by sentient beings, which are called the ‘ten forces’, and one of these is the force knowing all paths. Buddhas know all internal paths and where they lead to. Out of their great compassion, they teach living beings how to discriminate between correct paths and incorrect paths. If Buddhas did not teach Dharma, we would never know about the paths to liberation and, because of our familiarity with self-grasping, we would wander in samsara forever with no hope of escape. We have been following incorrect paths since beginningless time but now, through the kindness of Buddha Shakyamuni, we have the opportunity to study a complete presentation of the spiritual paths to liberation and full enlightenment.”

“By training in meditation we can attain a permanent cessation of delusions and thereby experience the permanent inner peace of liberation, or nirvana. We need to attain liberation because for as long as we are trapped in samsara, the vicious cycle of uncontrolled death and rebirth, we will never find real peace and happiness.
We can attain the ultimate peace of enlightenment by training in the meditations explained in this book. We need to attain enlightenment so that we can benefit all living beings.”
