Greater Kansas City Society of Health-System Pharmacists GKC meets on the third Thursday of each month, January-June and August-November.

Our mission is to provide education, leadership, and advocacy to support our members in helping people make the best use of medications. Programs are held locally and ACPE approved CE is offered for qualified speakers. Programs cover a variety of topics and all focus on pharmaceutical management.

📅 Presented live on August 6, 2025, attendees explored:�✔️ SMART outcomes and why they matter�✔️ Key principles behind power and sample size�✔️ Choosing the right statistical test for your variable types and study design�✔️ When to apply advanced tests like regression or Cox models
💡 Attendees left equipped to plan meaningful, statistically sound research projects that move pharmacy practice forward.

GKCSHP extends our sincere appreciation to Dr. Andrew Smith, PharmD, FCCP, BCPS, BCCP, Clinical Professor at the UMKC School of Pharmacy, for delivering an insightful session: “Research Methodology Part 1: From Question to Study Population.”

🔎 Dr. Smith helped attendees strengthen the foundation of their projects by exploring:
✔️ How to construct a focused research question using the PICO framework
✔️ Selecting the most appropriate study design based on objectives
✔️ Common pitfalls in research question development and design
✔️ Defining your target population and writing clear inclusion/exclusion criteria
✔️ The difference between general, target, and study populations

💡 Participants walked away with practical strategies for shaping feasible, valid, and ethically sound research projects—equipped to move from an idea to a well-defined study protocol.

GKCSHP extends our sincere thanks to Dr. Scott Aldridge, PharmD, BCCCP of Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City for kicking off our 2025 Research Certificate Program with his impactful session: “Introduction to Research Projects.”

🔍 Dr. Aldridge walked attendees through the fundamentals of pharmacy research, covering:
✔️ The importance of pharmacist-driven research
✔️ Strategies for turning observations into researchable questions
✔️ How to differentiate research from quality improvement
✔️ The role of the IRB and ethical considerations
✔️ Key components of forming a research team and building a project timeline
