We're very excited to announce the first of our Fall releases, the debut album by Tomas Fujiwara's Percussion Quartet, Dream Up (OOYH 036), featuring Tomas with Tim Keiper, Kaoru Watanabe, and Patricia Brennan. This will be out September 12, 2025 and you can check out a preview track, Blue Pickup, only on Bandcamp for now (link in the comments).

We'll have two singles coming soon, and we can very honestly say this release is unlike any of ours before it. Influences range from Max Roach's ensemble M'Boom, Bobby Hutcherson's contributions to albums like Out To Lunch, all the way to Tomas' run in the Broadway production Stomp early in his NYC years. This is a CD + digital release (sorry vinyl fans, it is slightly too long to fit on a record). Pre-order up now for CDs, and we should have these slightly before release date...we'll be shipping them as soon as we have them in hand.

Super A+ album art and design by TJ Huff. More soon on this, and we'll be rolling out the rest of our Fall pre-orders in the coming weeks as well as some very exciting albums in the new Beacons series. Thanks so much for the support, we hope you enjoy this!

ANNOUNCING launch day for our brand new digital-only all improvised series OOYH Beacons! And we are thrilled that OOYH B001 is the debut from the elecro-acoustic trio of Mabel Kwan, Mauricio Pauly, and Carrie Shaw called Lunches for the Week. It is now streaming everywhere and available for purchase only on Bandcamp, link in the comments. All of the art + design for Beacons is by TJ Huff, and we can’t wait to share them with you...they look amazing! Enjoy, here’s a bit more info on Lunches for the Week:

Have you ever seen a 1950s jello salad? Have you ever said something in the past that you replay in your mind again and again, a memory which has over time become a lime-green, jiggly, bizarrely charming monstrosity? Like Betty Crocker’s most diabolical product developers, electroacoustic trio Mabel Kwan (Chris Dammann Sextet, Honestly Same, Dal Niente), Mauricio Pauly (Distractfold Ensemble, Eve Egoyan, No Hay Discos), and Carrie Shaw (Dal Niente, Quince Ensemble) got together in a dusty, warm garage to cook up Lunches for the Week, long-form improvisations featuring savory layers of synths, pedal steel, garden-tool percussion, and vocals processed through guitar pedals. Their debut as a trio, this album broods, squirms, and crackles, building and rebuilding memories that cause us to question the nature of retelling and replication. Lunches for the Week, the first album from the new digital-only all improvised series Out Of Your Head Records Beacons, releases everywhere on June 27, 2025.

We just put up a preview track from Christopher Hoffman’s forthcoming solo cello album, REX, due out January 17, 2026. That’s a long ways away! Chris has a performance this weekend at the New Directions Cello Festival, so this seemed like a good time to give a little preview. The single edit of REX is a short one, but gives you an idea as to how great this is going to be. REX was recorded in the same house in upstate NY where Rex Brasher lived, and where he made most of his paintings. The LP features Brasher’s art with layout/design by TJ Huff in a pretty awesome gatefold (the cover is TJ’s design and Brasher’s handwriting). We put those up for pre-order because at 500 copies they are likely to sell out. We are hoping to have LPs in hand sometime in October and we’ll be shipping them early before release date. Enjoy this beautiful music (link in comments), and we’ll have way more about this one over the coming months!

ANNOUNCING! Out Of Your Head Beacons is a new series from OOYH Records, launching June 2025. It is similar to the Untamed series in that it is digital-only, but Beacons focuses on entirely improvised performances. It will cover a wide range of genres and will feature music from artists from across the world. While the majority of our catalog is Brooklyn, Richmond, Baltimore, or Chicago based, a main goal of the Beacons series is to highlight music from a much wider geographic area. Here are the first three albums with release dates, and a fourth slated for September featuring a trio of Dave Ballou, Anthony Pirog, and Devin Gray. The awesome original series art + design is by TJ Huff (huffart.com) and each features a city or place central to that recording. We’re so excited to share this music with you! OUT TODAY! The Hemphill Stringtet Plays the Music of Julius Hemphill (OOYH 035), featuring Curtis Stewart and Sam Bardfeld on violin, Stephanie Griffin on viola, and Tomeka Reid on cello, releases today April 4, 2025 on Out Of Your Head Records in LP + CD + digital formats. The recording features Mingus Gold, Hemphill’s deeply original take on three Mingus compositions originally commissioned by the Kronos String Quartet, and four World Saxophone Quartet pieces penned by Hemphill. Notably, this is the first studio recording ever made of Mingus Gold (the only extant version being a live recording by the Daedalus Quartet) and the first string quartet recordings of any of the great WSQ original repertoire.

There is an album release concert on April 16 at the Greenwich House in NYC, and both CDs and LPs are in stock and shipping now! The album art + design is by TJ Huff, featuring a photo of Julius Hemphill by Nina Contini Melis. Stay tuned for a Wax Mage announcement coming soon...we haven’t seen them yet, but we have reason to believe it’ll be a doozy. Liner notes in both the LP and CD are by Kevin Whitehead. Link to buy CD/LP/digital as well as stream anywhere you stream in the comments. Go listen, we think you will love this music (we do)!!
