Abayi Ohanze Unity Cup Highlights Abia’s Grassroots Sports Revitalisation

The Honourable Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Hon. Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, was the guest of honour on Tuesday as Abayi Ohanze community played host to the historic Abayi Ohanze Unity Cup, a grassroots football tournament that blended competition with talent discovery.

The event, hosted by Engr. Chinedu Onyeizu, a prominent son of the community and Labour Party’s Abia South Senatorial candidate in the 2023 general election, drew key government officials and community leaders, underscoring its growing significance on Abia State’s sports calendar.

Also in attendance were the Honourable Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday, and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth, Comrade Onyebuchi Chukwu, whose presence reinforced the administration’s emphasis on youth inclusion and development.

Beyond the matches, the tournament served as a talent identification platform. Hon. Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba used the occasion to scout emerging prospects, granting two outstanding young players waivers to participate in the state trials, a move that opens pathways to higher-level opportunities.

The Unity Cup reflects the people-centred and ongoing sports revitalisation drive in Abia State under the leadership of Governor Alex Chioma Otti, where sports is increasingly deployed as a tool for youth empowerment, social cohesion, and community development.

Residents of Abayi Ohanze commended Engr. Chinedu Onyeizu for his sustained commitment to unity and youth engagement, describing the tournament as a practical demonstration of how grassroots sports can inspire hope and harness local talent.

Arochukwu U19 tournament ends with Team D lifting the title

Football, youth development and a touch of Christmas festivity converged in Arochukwu as the 2025 Arochukwu Sports Events came to a close with the Eze Kanu Oji U19 Football Tournament final. The competition brought together some of the area’s most promising young players, reinforcing grassroots football as both a community anchor and a pathway to opportunity.

Team D were crowned champions after a tense 2–1 victory over Team C in a final that was as dramatic as it was entertaining. Team C controlled long spells of the match and struck the woodwork three times, but Team D’s efficiency in front of goal proved decisive. A late goal from Team C raised hopes of a comeback, but the champions held firm to secure the title.

Individual excellence was also recognised, with the tournament’s Most Valuable Player selected by a technical panel led by Chief John Obuh, Chairman of Abia Warriors FC, with the active support of the Honourable Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba Nwadinma. Their involvement highlighted the tournament’s growing relevance as a scouting platform for professional football.

Addressing spectators, Sir Nwaobilor reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Alex Otti to the revival of sports and youth development across Abia State. He assured the Arochukwu community that calls for a standard football pitch would be considered, stressing the importance of proper facilities in nurturing young talent. The Commissioner also made a monetary donation to support the organisers and participating teams.

Held in honour of the late Eze Kanu Oji, the festival extended beyond football to include a marathon and the Aro Walk for Light. With backing from partners such as Coca Cola and MTN, the event blended competition with community spirit, closing the year in a mood of celebration, reflection and renewed hope for the next generation of athletes.

"Youthful and Useful Projects" Pay Courtesy Visit to Abia Sports Commissioner

A delegation from Youthful and Useful Projects, led by its founder and organiser, Dr Ajere Grace Chikamnaele Nancy, paid a courtesy visit to the Abia State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, to appreciate the state government for its support and partnership.

The team, which included Mr Ekenwa Amarachukwu (Conference Organising Head of Protocol) and committee members Akwuruoha Marvelous, Chukwuemeka Sunday, Dr Aluka Obioma (Founder, Lift the Boy Child Initiative), Pharm. Ifeanyi Obasi, and Elvis Uche, expressed gratitude for the government’s backing of the recently concluded Youthful and Useful Conference and Outreach.

Speaking during the visit, the group highlighted its core mission of empowering young people through annual empowerment conferences, skill acquisition programmes, and business start-up guidance. They explained that the initiative partners with NGOs, large-scale businesses and individuals, while also engaging in voluntary social interventions such as free medical outreaches and feeding street children.

According to the organisers, the ultimate goal is to equip young people with practical skills, confidence and support systems that enable them to build sustainable livelihoods and, in turn, give back to society. Their motto, they noted, is “Raising global giants, giving back to the society.”

In his response, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba commended the group for its commitment to youth transformation in Abia State. He reaffirmed the government’s readiness to partner with individuals and organisations focused on people-centred development, describing such efforts as central to the agenda of Governor Alex Chioma Otti’s administration.

The visit ended on a note of shared resolve to deepen collaboration in advancing opportunities for Abia’s youth and strengthening community development across the state.
