SCIENCE BUILT BY FILIPINOS, FOR FILIPINOS: DOST-NCR 2026 RSTW, OPISYAL NANG BINUKSAN SA VALENZUELA CITY!

DOST Scholar Explores Curcumin derived from Local Turmeric to Boost Muscle Health in
Filipino Seniors
A groundbreaking study by a Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Council for Health
Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD) scholar is shining a light on natural interventions to
combat age-related muscle decline among older Filipinos.
Dr. Maria Grace A. De Guzman, a recent PhD in Health Research graduate from the University of Santo
Tomas (UST), dedicated her doctoral dissertation to exploring the potential of curcumin—a bioactive
compound derived from turmeric—to manage sarcopenia. Sarcopenia is a condition characterized by
the progressive loss of muscle strength, mass, and function, which severely impacts mobility,
independence, and overall quality of life in seniors.
Underscoring the national relevance of her work, DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. emphasized
the importance of proactive geriatric healthcare. "Given the growing elderly population in the country,
studies on muscle conditions like sarcopenia become increasingly relevant. With our scholarship grants
through the DOST-PCHRD, we provide opportunities for physician-scientists to train and pursue
research that addresses the tangible health concerns of Filipinos." — DOST Secretary Renato U.
Solidum Jr.
Dr. De Guzman’s research focused on leveraging the well-known antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and
anti-aging properties of curcumin to support muscle function and reduce pain among older Filipino
adults at risk of the condition.
Dr. De Guzman’s dissertation has already garnered international recognition. Her findings were
presented as a free paper at the XXVII World Congress of Neurology in Seoul, South Korea, with its
abstract officially published in the prestigious Journal of the Neurological Sciences.
The study provides vital scientific evidence that could reshape future clinical practices, inform health
policy development, and pave the way for practical, safe, and evidence-based approaches to geriatric
care in the Philippines.
Dr. De Guzman credited her academic and scientific breakthroughs directly to the government’s robust
support. "I am grateful to the DOST-PCHRD for funding my doctoral studies. This program equipped
me with the skills to investigate conditions affecting physical capacity," she said. "I dedicate this
research to helping older Filipino adults maintain their strength and quality of life as they age."
DOST continues to champion local researchers to drive national development. "We are very proud of
scholars like Dr. De Guzman who expand our understanding of health conditions affecting our people,"
Secretary Solidum added. "Moving forward, we remain eager to forge partnerships with institutions like
UST to support the training and development of more physician-scientists in the Philippines."

FORTUNATO "BOY" DELA PEÑA, na kasalukuyan ding Chairman ng Philippine Foundation for Science and Technology (PFST)!

*MGA HIGHLIGHTS SA ATING KWENTUHAN:

The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) confirms the launch of the Long March 7A rocket from the People’s Republic of China. Expected debris from the rocket launch was projected to have fallen within the identified drop zones (DZ): approximately 41 NM away from Burgos, Ilocos Norte, and 64 NM away from Dalupiri Island, Cagayan (DZ1); and 67 NM away from Santa Ana, Cagayan, and 80 NM away from Camiguin Norte (DZ2). Both drop zones are within the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

The Long March 7A rocket was launched from the Wenchang Space Launch Site in Wenchang, Hainan at around 7:50PM PhST on 29 July 2026.

Details of the rocket drop zone were disclosed through a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) warning of an “aerospace flight activity.” PhilSA disseminated a pre-launch report to relevant government agencies and authorities prior to the launch.

Unburned debris from rockets, such as the booster and fairing, are designed to be discarded as the rocket enters outer space. While not projected to fall on land features or inhabited areas, falling debris poses danger and potential risk to ships, aircraft, fishing boats, and other vessels that will pass through the drop zone. There is also a possibility for the debris to float around the area and wash toward nearby coasts. Additionally, the possibility of an uncontrolled re-entry to the atmosphere of the rocket’s upper stages returning from outer space cannot be ruled out at this time.

As global launch rates continue to accelerate, debris shed during staging events and the uncontrolled re-entry of large rocket upper stages pose growing hazards—not only to other spacecraft, but to civil aviation and to populations on the ground. The Philippines invites international partners to explore how our region can develop coordinated protocols and capabilities that protect both our space assets and our people on the ground.

PhilSA reiterates its advice for the public to inform local authorities if suspected debris is sighted. PhilSA also cautions against retrieving or coming in close contact with these materials that may contain remnants of toxic substances such as rocket fuel.
