Milky-Way.Kiwi is a NZ space education social enterprise. Co-founded by Hari Mogosanu & Sam Leske. We love astronomy and all things space.

Here in New Zealand we have amazing dark skies and the Milky Way reaches its zenith right above our heads. A frequent question we hear is "why bother with space?". Many inventions that came from space exploration are saving and improving lives here on Earth. Space is the future of humankind wether we are aware of it or not. We are based in New Zealand but we see ourselves as a global society that wants to get people across the world interested and involved in space and astronomy. Our goal is to help humanity spread across the cosmos so that we are not all in the one place.

This is C/2025 R3 PANSTARRS tonight. The tail
is starting look very cool. We took this image with our SeeStar while observing the comet in our f12 8” refractor. Visually it has a beautiful green hue and only a hint of a tail. Looking forward to tomorrow when the Moon will be a bit less bright and rising a bit later.

These are the meteor tracks our camera has helped triangulate this year, so far. Our camera is part of a network run by Fireballs Aotearoa which has around 160 cameras across the country. It’s run and operated by volunteers from schools, astronomical societies, amateur astronomers and more. Yay for citizen science!

We’ve been working with the NZ Astrophysics Olympiad team over the last couple of days in Wairarapa Dark Sky Reserve - perfect place for training our Olympiad teams! Big thanks to RASNZ for support and also huge thanks to Bruce Ngataierua to adding his extensive expertise to the training. Also loads of support from Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. Fantastic to work with an incredible bunch of students from around New Zealand.

All 5 nucleobases have been found in the sample of Ryugu that the Japanese spacecraft Hayabusa 2 went to and sampled, pretty cool! The good news is the paper is open access so you can read it!

A new study reveals all five fundamental nucleobases—the molecular "letters" of life—have been detected in samples from the asteroid Ryugu.

Parliament is reviewing two Bills (yes, two): the Planning Bill and the Natural Environment Bill.

Right now, light pollution (artificial light at night) is not explicitly recognised in the draft legislation. That’s a problem, because if it isn’t clearly in the law, it becomes much harder to protect dark skies in the future.

Whether you think this should be led by local councils or by central government, the first step is the same: light pollution must be recognised in legislation.
