Avarie Artbooks Vuoti A Rendere International Edition (AVARIE), a Paris/Berlin based independent publisher

Artbooks Vuoti A Rendere International Edition is a Paris based independent publisher founded in 2012 specialising in art and photo books and exploring the relationship between texts and images. With thoughtful stylistic choices, accurate studies on contents and a particular attention to the quality of subjects and materials, Avarie's publications reflect a concept that sees the book as a

jamming incident in the system: a privileged moment of thought and a space of creation that results from a close collaboration with the artist and lies at the outskirts of commercial production. Vuoti A Rendere is an Italian expression to indicate containers, generally bottles, that need to be returned to the vendor according to a clause that not only asks for their return, but also requires a cash deposit from the buyer. Like the tramps who wander the streets of Berlin with no other belongings than those empty bottles they can return in exchange for a few coins for survival, Avarie takes an interest in the artistic process as a form of restitution and resistance by something that disappears or emerges and continues to emerge. The books that are created and proposed by Avarie are conceived like a last trace of an emptiness that continues revealing itself in the shape of a form.

La géométrie qui module le vent, les saillies de lumière. Le soleil qui inscrit sa musique, dévoile son parchemin sur la pierre. Le soleil se fragmente dans la pierre et nous livre une partition, un chant, une géométrie céleste. Architecture solaire, hymne au soleil, livre de pierre où se lit le langage du soleil | Teo Hernández – excerpt from La Charité : le savoir, l’histoire, le passé, la pierre, l’architecture, part of Cinq films d'août, 1986, super8, distributed by LIGHT CONE, on show at until 4 September, in the framework of the exhibition Corpus Marseille.

Looking back on a deeply enriching month spent in the South of France, between Marseille and Arles. Grateful once again to the entire team at the Cipm | Centre international de poésie Marseille for kindly inviting me to speak about my critical essay on mineral matter, and for the opportunity to engage with such a thoughtful and passionate audience. The Cipm’s dedication to contemporary poetry–through its remarkable library and exhibitions–is truly inspiring.

Happy and honored that Devenir minéral by Giuliana Prucca, Position(s) by Antoine d’Agata, From Static Oblivion by Ion Grigorescu, and kamera cahier n°9 (dedicated to Peter Downsbrough and co-edited with ) are now available in free access at the CIPM Library, Centre de la Vieille Charité, Marseille.

It was also a joy–and quite moving–to reconnect with friends at the Rencontres d’Arles and FIDMarseille. Thank you .graziosi.x .hallard .artist for the conversations, and good energy throughout.

In the chaos of this world, the only true and meaningful forms of anarchy are poetry and friendship 🖤

dans cet état mon esprit est solide, je veux dire dur, chaque pensée est une obsession, chaque obsession est comme de la pierre | antonin artaud

dear friends and book lovers, you are warmly invited to join Giuliana Prucca – writer, curator, and founder of AVARIE – at the Cipm | Centre international de poésie Marseille, for the presentation of her critical essay Devenir minéral, on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at 11 am.

Published by L'éditeur du dimanche in Paris, Devenir minéral establishes critical and poetic connections among texts and works by various artists, writers, and thinkers—from Antonin Artaud to Jean Dubuffet, Jan Fabre, Anselm Kiefer, Yves Klein, Gutaï, Joë Bousquet, Francis Ponge, Wols, Alberto Giacometti, Claudio Parmiggiani, Gilles Deleuze, and Aby Warburg—through the prism of the mineral matter, encompassing stone, sand, dust, or earth. Challenging conventional art history, the essay embraces a critically inventive approach that celebrates anti-critique, disrupts traditional reading habits, and occupies writing space differently, providing a physically engaging experience.

The Cipm is a center dedicated to the creation and dissemination of contemporary poetry, both French and international, based in Marseille since 1990. Its main areas of focus are public readings, access to and publishing of specialized resources in contemporary poetry (through both its library and editorial work), writers-in-residence programs, audience outreach, and international exchange.

The Cipm library houses around 50,000 items and is internationally recognized for its exceptional holdings: French poetry, essays, philosophy, art books, international journals, the Anne-Marie Albiach collection, American poetry, multilingual materials, and audiovisual resources.

Two upcoming events celebrate our beloved artist Peter Downsbrough (1940, New Jersey – 2024, Brussels), starting tonight 🖤

📍If you're in Milan, don’t miss the opening of his solo show at gallery at 7 PM. Curated by , the exhibition is designed to occupy the entire space with wall works, sound, and video pieces. Downsbrough’s minimalist approach explores the relationship between language and space, revealing intersections between construction and perception.

📍From May 29 to July 7, BOOOOOKS in Antwerp () will present a comprehensive overview of Peter Downsbrough’s impressive body of self-published and freely-editioned works. Downsbrough belonged to that first generation of artists—including colleagues such as Robert Barry, Sol LeWitt, and Lawrence Weiner in New York; and John Baldessari, Ed Ruscha, and Allan Ruppersberg in California—who embraced the book as a medium for presenting their work.

📚 Book lovers and friends in Barcelona this weekend are warmly invited to visit Art Photo Bcn | Photobook Market taking place on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th, 2025, at Disseny Hub
At the and .publishing table, you’ll also find the remaining copies of Kamera Cahier N°9, dedicated to Peter Downsbrough and accompanying his exhibition as part of our last year edition of KAMERA SERIES | experimental films and printed matter. A copy of the critical essay 'Devenir minéral' – written and curated by Giuliana Prucca, founder and artistic director of Avarie, designed by Vito Raimondi, and published by L'éditeur du dimanche Frederique Destribats – has been spotted at Le Monte-en-l'air bookstore in Ménilmontant, Paris 🖤

I've truly learned from Antonin Artaud to look sideways and obliquely, understanding that significant things are always written in the margins. It's a pleasure to see our 'mineral' surrounded by such intriguing titles, meaningful books, and remarkable authors. Coincidences do not exist.

Special thanks to Aurélie Garreau for her attentive listening and thoughtful selection.

A copy of 'SNATURAMENTI | a workbook by Flatform on displacement' — curated once again by Giuliana Prucca, designed by Vito Raimondi, and published by AVARIE and LIGHT CONE éditions — is also available in the bookstore

OP – Back from Brussels, reflecting on the events of the past week.
Heartfelt thanks to CLA | Collection de Livres d'Artiste, hosted at Espace Delvaux, Bibliothèque de Watermael for inviting me to engage with passionate book lovers and offer insight into independent publishing as a curatorial and artistic practice — and to all those who attended and contributed to the exchange.

All AVARIE's books – including 'Kamera cahiers', co-edited with , and Giuliana Prucca's essay 'Devenir minéral', published by L'éditeur du dimanche – are now available for loan at CLA. The library’s holdings feature over 2,500 artists' books, and this initiative underscores a strong commitment to making contemporary art publishing — and this rich artistic resource — easily accessible to all.

AND – Thanks to ERG école de recherche graphique and Denis Deprez for the rich and nourishing session with the students of the Narration department. It was a pleasure to discover such inspiring and creative research projects. Bravo!

Special thanks to Bettina and Michel — you know why 🖤

📷 De aspectibus, copy of the treatise Kitab al-Manazir by Ibn al-Haytham, known as Alhazen | England, last quarter of the 13th century | Manuscript on parchment.

This manuscript contains a translation of the treatise on optics written by the Arab scientist Alhazen. Its translation and distribution in the West in the 13th century revolutionised scientific knowledge: until then it was thought that light rays were emitted by the eye rather than received by it. The author explored the perception of light and colours, as well as optical illusions. His reflection may well have had an impact on late 13th-century painting.

📍Today marks the opening of Ion Grigorescu's exhibition 'L’Homme – Centre de l’Univers' at the gallery in Vienna, showcasing a dialogue between the artist's early pieces and new works. The exhibition runs until May 31, 2025.

With a selection of photographs, collages, drawings, sculptures and paintings, the exhibition highlights the artist’s longstanding interest in depicting the body, everyday life, and individual’s intimate endeavours as a foundation of his varied practice. Thereby pointing to the remarkable continuity of Grigorescu’s artistic preoccupations and his longstanding ethical engagement. His film 'L'Homme - Centre de l’Univers' is also being shown, which gives the exhibition its title. It goes beyond traditional storytelling and serves as an investigative tool that explores his bodily movements and reflects the artist's holistic understanding of the world.

METHOD
A residency of 147 days.
23 September 2024 - 17 February 2025.

Last chance to experience 'Method' by at . Today marks the final hours to immerse yourself in his experimental residency and the artist's creative process. At the invitation of the museum, Antoine d'Agata has transformed Room 21bis 4th floor into a studio for 147 days. He has been working on his vast photographic archives, collections of objects, books, and films—reflecting on his trajectory and attempting to draw some sort of conclusion through a monumental installation, L’Atelier-monde [The World-Studio], and his 256 notebooks. This 'Method' project represents a radical shift in his practice, blending art with life in what he calls “work-praxis,” an ongoing, evolving creation.

Remembering the end of this unconventional exhibition is, in fact, a tribute to beginnings, to collaborations, to communities, and to the encounters that set new starts. AVARIE began with, and thanks to, Antoine d'Agata's Position(s), and a book is an infinite ending 🖤
