Avarie Artbooks Vuoti A Rendere International Edition (AVARIE), a Paris/Berlin based independent publisher

Artbooks Vuoti A Rendere International Edition is a Paris based independent publisher founded in 2012 specialising in art and photo books and exploring the relationship between texts and images. With thoughtful stylistic choices, accurate studies on contents and a particular attention to the quality of subjects and materials, Avarie's publications reflect a concept that sees the book as a

jamming incident in the system: a privileged moment of thought and a space of creation that results from a close collaboration with the artist and lies at the outskirts of commercial production. Vuoti A Rendere is an Italian expression to indicate containers, generally bottles, that need to be returned to the vendor according to a clause that not only asks for their return, but also requires a cash deposit from the buyer. Like the tramps who wander the streets of Berlin with no other belongings than those empty bottles they can return in exchange for a few coins for survival, Avarie takes an interest in the artistic process as a form of restitution and resistance by something that disappears or emerges and continues to emerge. The books that are created and proposed by Avarie are conceived like a last trace of an emptiness that continues revealing itself in the shape of a form.

At Leporello, Giuliana and Valentina will discuss the origins of the project, the format of the exhibitions, their place within Berlin's art scene, and the KAMERA CAHIERS — limited-edition letterpress publications accompanying each event — while reflecting on the importance of supporting independent artistic practices as a political act, a form of cultural resistance, and an example of sustainability in a time marked by the growing crisis in public funding for culture.

AVARIE is very happy to share the news of the first monographic exhibition in China by Flatform, opening today at Power Station of Art, Shanghai 🖤

From May 1 to June 28, 2026, 'FLATFORM: Concert for Films and Works' offers a comprehensive overview of nearly twenty years of the collective’s artistic practice. Alternating films, paintings, sculptures, sound works, and performances, the show enacts the intrinsic interdisciplinarity of Flatform’s artwork.

The starting point is video, which expands into physical counterparts—bridging the intangible nature of moving images with matter and space. The exhibition unfolds through more than ten groups of installations, where works mirror and transform one another, and where viewing is not merely a visual act, but becomes an exploration of temporal forms, material memory, and perceptual thresholds.

Organised by Power Station of Art 上海当代艺术博物馆 with the support of Istituto Italiano di Cultura - Shanghai and the Italian Council (13th Edition) Direzione Generale Creatività Contemporanea Ministero della Cultura (Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture), produced and coordinated by Ramdom, in collaboration with Intersección - Festival Internacional de Cine de A Coruña and .are.my.keys.art (Vienna).
Curated by and Francesco D’Arelli

blank books. empty books. or books made of little. few words. few images. often, few pages.

There is a new and interesting exhibition at Wittockiana, Musée des arts du livre et de la reliure, in Brussels that resonates with our practice: A minima, nicely curated by Didier Decoux, gathers over a century of these books made of silence — from 1876 to now — featuring Bruno Munari, Giovanni Anselmo, George Maciunas, Herman de Vries, Irma Blank, Jiří Valoch, Jonathan Monk, John Cage, Marcel Broodthaers, Franco Vaccari, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Peter Downsbrough, among many others.

There is a selection of publications by AVARIE available in the bookshop, in dialogue with the works on display, including Snaturamenti by Flatform (co-published with LIGHT CONE), From Static Oblivion by Ion Grigorescu, Devenir minéral by Giuliana Prucca, and Peter Downsbrough's Hence | Here — along with the last few copies of his Kamera Cahier n. 9 (co-published with ).

Thank you to director Sophie Briard for making space for our books 🖤

📆 On view until September 27. Wittockiana is one of Brussels' most singular spaces. Go.

In the wake of the exhibition 'Echo Delay Reverb: American Art, Francophone Thought', which closed at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris last February, AVARIE is pleased to find Giuliana Prucca's essay 'Devenir minéral' at the bookshop 🖤
https://avariepublishing.cargo.site/prucca-devenir-mineral

The show explored how art in the USA catalysed the revolutionary energies of French-speaking thinkers whose work generated unexpected forms and tools for a critical vision of art and society. Archival materials throughout highlighted those who played a crucial role in disseminating these ideas in the United States, including Sylvère Lotringer — whom I had the chance to meet and whose 'Fous d'Artaud' I translated into Italian as 'Pazzi d'Artaud' for Medusa edizioni in 2006.

For the first time, it also brought Artaud into dialogue with the theories of the 'informe' — as developed by Georges Bataille, Rosalind Krauss and Yve-Alain Bois — an encounter our essay offers an original reading of.

Last year I had the privilege of helping a dear friend and brilliant researcher and anthropologist, Tiziana N. Beltrame from University of Padua, revise her chapter on museum classifications, spaces and practices—on how living things are ordered between science, art and heritage.

Her essay is now part of a newly published edited volume by
📖 Raccontare la biodiversità. Scienze umane e musei naturalistici [Telling the story of biodiversity. Humanities and natural history museums]
https://www.carocci.it/prodotto/raccontare-la-biodiversita

In these times of deep unease, when an unsettling sense of irreversibility seems to hang over everything, I find again unexpected comfort in turning toward other species—toward the archives of living beings, natural history collections, herbariums.

Highly recommended book 🖤 to try putting a bit of order to this chaos and discover how a tiny dried plant can say more about the state of this world and stand as a powerful critique of imperialism 🌿

Dear friends and book lovers,
if you couldn’t attend my talk at the Cipm | Centre international de poésie Marseille on June 14, 2025, the recording of the presentation of Devenir minéral is now available online on the Cipm website (in French only).
https://cipmarseille.fr/lire-ecouter-voir/5287

My warmest thanks to the entire Cipm team for their generous invitation, thoughtful exchange, and hospitality.

is a center dedicated to the creation and dissemination of contemporary poetry, both French and international, based in Marseille since 1990. The Cipm library houses around 50,000 items and is internationally recognized for its exceptional holdings: French poetry, essays, philosophy, art books, international journals, the Anne-Marie Albiach collection, American poetry, multilingual materials, and audiovisual resources.

Devenir minéral proposes a rereading of a significant moment in twentieth-century art history through the writing of Antonin Artaud and through inorganic matter—stone, sand, earth, dust. Adopting an experimental approach that unsettles traditional reading habits and inhabits the space of writing differently, the book weaves critical and poetic connections between texts and works by artists, writers, and thinkers including Jean Dubuffet, Jan Fabre, Yves Klein, Francis Ponge, Anselm Kiefer, Joë Bousquet, Wols, Alberto Giacometti, Gaston Bachelard, Gilles Deleuze, Aby Warburg, Claudio Parmiggiani, as well as the Gutai and Butoh movements.
