This is how a 12 foot statue of the ‘unknown soldier’ was carried to the end of Southend Pier!

The statue is made up of over 2,000 knitted poppies, representing soldiers who lost their lives in the first and second world wars.

It’s part of the Poppies on the Pier installation, which is open to visitors until 16 November.

Standard ticket entry costs apply. The Royal British Legion are collecting on the pier.

🚨 Man stabbed multiple times in Southend on Saturday night.

A man is in hospital with serious injuries after receiving "a number of stab wounds" in Westcliff on Saturday evening at around 8:30pm.

The victim managed to get to Southend Hospital's emergency department, arriving shortly before 9pm on 8 November.

Hospital staff then alerted police after realising he had sustained several stab wounds.

Detectives believe the attack happened near the junction of Station Road and Palmerston Road, near to Westcliff train station.

Officers have traced the victim’s movements back to a wall at the top of Palmerston Road.

Police are now working quickly to review CCTV and speak with residents, but they are urgently asking for the public’s help to piece together what happened.

They are particularly interested in anyone who was in the area between 8pm and 8.50pm – walking or driving - or people who have security cameras facing the street.

Detective Superintendent Shaun Kane said: “We’re working diligently to build a fuller picture of how this man sustained his serious injuries and we’ve been able to track him back this location – a wall at the top of Palmerston Road where it meets Station Road.

“Key to our work is speaking with people who witnessed any concerning or violent behaviour in the area on Saturday evening.

“It could be that you were walking past and witnessed an incident, or you were driving past and may have caught something on dashcam or your doorbell camera captured something of interest.

“I would appeal to anyone who has information on what happened to please come forward.”

You can report information via the Essex Police website or through their 24/7 Live Chat service.

You should quote incident number 1382 of 8 November when submitting information.

Information can also be given anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Latest: There was a "large disturbance" outside the Roebuck Wetherspoons pub in Rayleigh High Street last night - witnesses reported chaotic scenes, with multiple people fighting.

Police have confirmed they were called to the area shortly after 10.45pm on Friday 7 November after a group became involved in a confrontation outside the pub.

The fight caused traffic to be briefly held up while police officers worked to bring the situation under control.

Three men in their twenties were arrested on suspicion of assault and affray. Police say one of those men was later further arrested on suspicion of assaulting officers.

All three men remain in custody today while police enquiries continue.

Because this happened in such a busy public area, officers want to hear from anyone who saw what happened or captured it on their phone or dashcam.

Information can be submitted through the Essex Police website or via their 24 hour Live Chat service. You should quote incident 1518 of 7 November. Anonymous reports can also be made via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Dog found running loose in Southend city centre this afternoon!

A report was made to us at 12:45pm by Ruth Wingrove-Smith: "I just found this lovely boy on Sutton Road near to Wentworth Road.

"He's a beautiful dog - someone must be missing him. I'm taking him to vet to see if he's chipped."

UPDATE: According the woman who found the dog, the vets have advised that the dog is microchipped but they cannot access the the database to the find owners.

Ruth then added: "Please can this post be shared by many people as I would love to get him reunited asap. Vets told me to call the dog warden but I would love to get him back to owner before going down that road."

🇬🇧 The UK’s largest Remembrance tribute has opened today - Over 110,000 handmade poppies now cover Southend Pier 🌺

The world’s longest pleasure pier has been transformed into a stunning sea of red, becoming the UK’s biggest Remembrance art installation.

Each of the poppies has been carefully knitted or crocheted by volunteers from across the world, coming from as far as Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA.

🧶 The scale of the display is extraordinary:
• 110,471 total poppies
• 4,872 metres of knitted green chains
• 1,578 kilometres of wool used
• Over 1,000 volunteers involved

Every single poppy represents love, remembrance and unity - a shared tribute to those who served and sacrificed in times of war.

From today 5 November until 16 November 2025, visitors can walk the 1.33-mile pier and experience this unforgettable display, which also tells stories of Southend Pier’s wartime role – from radar operations to D-Day preparations.

Councillor Matt Dent described the sight as “truly breathtaking”, while Cllr Daniel Cowan said it shows “the very best of Southend – creativity, compassion and community spirit.”

The Royal British Legion will be on the pier throughout the event, collecting for the Poppy Appeal.

It’s a moving display of remembrance, unity and pride – and a moment of history for Southend.

You can visit daily until 16 November 2025, between 10:15am to 5pm.
