🍑 “Beginnings, Community & the Joy of Local Food”
Today we invite you to take a moment with us to reflect on roots and beginnings. In the feature “Beginnings: A Journey Through Community”, photographer, storyteller and co-founder of Carole Topalian shares how her journey started in Santa Barbara, guided by a wise aunt who told her to “shoot fruit” — and how that simple nudge blossomed into a celebration of our region’s farms, people and flavors.

Here in Ventura County, our food isn’t just about what’s on the plate: it’s about the hands that harvested it, the stories that flowed between neighbors, the connections made at market tables and kitchen counters. It’s about community. 🌿
Let’s celebrate our beginnings — the farms, the makers, the community that makes our food meaningful. Tag someone who grows, cooks or brings food that connects you to place.

From cactus blossoms to sunset pollinations, dragon fruit is proving its wild beauty and its sweet payoff in Ventura County. 🌈

Alik Shulman (formerly Shulman Dragon Fruit Orchard/Nature with Alik) grows around 50 varieties, hand-pollinates nightly, and shares this tropical magic with folks at farmers’ markets and online. Locally grown = fresh, juicy, and full of life.

Want to taste or grow your own? Try his dragon fruit lemonade (fresh fruit, lemon, mint, agave) — or check for cuttings and plants if you want a piece of the orchard at home.

✨ Hearth with a Heart: Rekindling Community in Moorpark ✨

There’s something magical happening in Moorpark — meet Hearth in the Alley, the warm-hearted restaurant and coffee spot that’s becoming the living room for locals. From wood-fired pizzas to soulful Latin-style dishes made with seasonal ingredients, Sebastian & Kellie Fernandez + Sergio Chavez are pouring everything into creating a place where you are the VIP. ❤️

And here’s the heart of it — a portion of profits goes toward feeding families and supporting urban gardens in Uganda. 🌍

Check out some behind-the-scenes and some of their mouthwatering creations:
1. co-owner .ferndz upgraded his pizza oven in the new brick-and-mortar establishment, and the pizza is better than ever.
2. Behind it all are Sebastian & Kellie Fernandez and — chefs, dreamers, and neighbors who believe food can bring people together.
3. Expect wood-fired pizzas, Latin-inspired comfort food, and seasonal flavors that celebrate local farms. 🍕🥗
4. Among the impressive staff hires is Nate Fortin who runs the coffee program at Hearth using both science and farming considerations to choose coffees and develop flavors.
5. At Hearth in the , community comes first. It’s the kind of place where everyone’s welcome and every meal feels like home. ❤️

Food Memories: Celebrating Traditional Mexican Dishes!
🌱❤️ “I cook the dishes my abuelita taught me—tamales, menudo, chili verde—they bring comfort and connection.” Dive into this heartfelt story about culinary heritage and family traditions.

“It’s really quite simple,” my abuelita says to me over a video call years ago. “Start with just a bit of sugar… ” Through Wi-Fi glitches that froze or sped up or disconnected us altogether, I leaned in closely to hear my grandmother pass on the recipes she loved growing up, and still ea...
