UKB Statement on the passing of Spike Bighorn

The United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians celebrates the life and mourns the passing of Spike Bighorn. Spike’s life paved the way for many to follow, and he led a life of impact. We offer our deepest prayers and love to his family.

Spike was a giant. He was a 2018 inductee in the Montana Indian Athletic Hall of Fame, was one of the first Native referees to officiate a state tournament in Montana, was a steadfast Tribal leader as Chairman of the Fort Peck Tribal Nations, and held leadership roles at the Bureau of Indian Affairs, specializing in education.

Spike will be remembered by his steadfast advocacy for Indian Country and the legacy he leaves future generations of Native athletes and referees to follow. Rest in peace, Spike Bighorn.
