Nestled along the scenic Comal River, New Braunfels, Texas, is a town rich in history and charm.

Known for its historic sites, it is home to the oldest bakery in Texas, a unique German waterpark, sprawling parks with trails and playgrounds, a train museum, and a spring-fed pool. The town’s dining and shopping scenes are equally vibrant, evolving alongside its recent growth, which has brought new buildings, homes, and retail establishments.

For photographer Tori Sandoval, however, the true beauty of New Braunfels lies beyond its modern attractions. Tori is captivated by the town’s historical roots and deep German heritage, finding inspiration in the old buildings and stories embedded within them. Her photography focuses on the tranquil cemeteries scattered throughout the area. These serene resting places house notable burials, expansive family plots, intricate wrought-iron fences, and beautifully crafted headstones.

Tori's favorite subjects include statues adorning graves and the personal tokens left behind in memory of the deceased. Through her lens, she invites viewers to discover a deeper, often overlooked beauty in these solemn spaces.

The first clues of their story are discovered when the author’s boyhood travels in the early 1970s lead him to a series of amazing structures hidden in the woods outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Over the years and decades that followed, a series of owners came and went from the property, each increasingly unfriendly. Some were openly hostile. The woods surrounding the property became thicker, and the trees were tagged with a series of signs: “Posted,” “Private Property,” and “No Trespassing.”

Stories even spread of a curious visitor being met with the barrel of a shotgun. Decades later, the author takes a chance return to the woods and finds that the structures are still there but deteriorating badly. Time is running out to learn about this remarkable place and the fascinating group of individuals that created it.This true story has never been told.

📚"Visionary," "Man of God," "Cult Leader," "Fugitive," "Inmate," "Patriot." John R. Harrell of Louisville, IL, far better known as “Johnny Bob," was—rightfully or not—called all those things during his long, colorful life. "JOHNNY BOB: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF JOHN R. HARRELL OF LOUISVILLE, ILLINOIS" by Cary O'Dell tells the story of this deeply religions and independently wealthy many who was known for his eccentric estate and the religious colony, which many labeled a "cult".

In August of 1961, U.S. federal agents stormed his Louisville property to retrieve an AWOL Marine who had taken refuge on Harrell's "sovereign" grounds. This military action, involving over 100 armed officers, was national news and set off a chain of events in the U.S. courts, in military tribunals, and eventually across the United States as Harrell and his family became fugitives, running from the law.
This book retraces Johnny Bob Harrell's nine decades from his claims of an early "miracle" healing to the founding of his religious community to the '61 siege, and Harrell's subsequent life as fugitive, federal inmate, and right-wing provocateur.

Extensively researched, this book unveils the rich history of the Gem State through a visual journey with historical black-and-white archival images followed by present-day full-color photographs of the same places.

Each photograph in Abandoned Idaho has a story behind it, and it is through these thought-provoking stories and first-hand accounts that one can find a human connection to the people that once lived, worked, played, and in some cases, died, at the places revealed in this book. Within these pages, an adventure awaits, for many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines explored in Abandoned Idaho are unknown even to Idaho’s life-long residents.

The author and contributing photographers have captured the haunting beauty of decay, transporting readers to the bygone era of bustling pioneer towns, mining camps, railroads, and one-room schoolhouses that are now little more than silent echoes of the past. Through the comparison of historical and present-day photographs, the dramatic time-wrought transformations can be truly appreciated. The author offers a perfect blend of engaging storytelling and insightful historical details.

Los Angeles is one of the biggest cities in the world, but is incongruously a ten-minute drive from a vast impenetrable mountain wilderness, the Angeles National Forest.

This 700,000-acre forest includes the San Gabriel Mountains, which are among the most treacherous and steep mountain ranges in the world. Every year, thousands of people get lost or injured hiking or skiing, get trapped in the abandoned mines that honeycomb the remote canyons, or drive their cars or motorcycles off the precipitous mountain roads that snake along cliff faces.

Since 1947, a dedicated group of volunteers from the Crescenta Valley has been rescuing these hapless victims.

The Montrose Search and Rescue team is one of the oldest SAR groups in the nation, and among the most professional, despite receiving no pay for risking their lives.

They perform search and rescue feats high on peaks, down in canyons, deep underground, in the snow and ice, and from the air. They have been called to travel nationwide to assist other SAR teams with less expertise. In their seventy years of service they have racked up thousands of thrilling rescues.

Most of the stories are uplifting, but some will break your heart. These men are modern-day heroes, and they live right here in our community.
