Arctic Monkeys and David Bowie:

When Arctic Monkeys were breaking through with their debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not in 2006, Alex Turner experienced one of the most surreal moments of his early career: meeting David Bowie backstage at a U.S. television show.

“We didn’t know what to say to him, you know. We were just overwhelmed. It was like a fu***ng runaway train in those days.”

Matt Helders later recalled another story where Bowie attended one of their gigs and was seated in the VIP area:

“They had tables up the top for guests and VIP guests
 our tour manager didn’t even realise, and he moved him so my brother and his wife could sit there
 He didn’t say anything like, ‘I’m David Bowie’ he just moved politely and then came to say hello afterwards.”

A few years later, Turner’s admiration came full circle through his side project The Last Shadow Puppets. Their cinematic, retro-inspired sound drew heavily from Bowie’s influence. In 2008, NME reported that Bowie himself had listened to their cover of one of his songs “In The Heat Of The Morning” and loved it.

Bowie told his website that he loved their version:

“That’s a delight! How lovely. A daymaker.”

In 2016, The Last Shadow Puppets performed a second cover to honor the memory of David Bowie: Moonage Daydream.
