The proposed route will connect Chennai, Mamallapuram, Marakkanam, Puducherry and Cuddalore, offering improved access to coastal towns, tourism hubs and economic centres. The project, which had remained stalled due to alignment issues near Puducherry, will now move forward, according to a statement made in Parliament.

Bengaluru’s Blue Line Metro, which will connect Silk Board to Kempegowda International Airport, has achieved 72 per cent civil completion, according to an update shared in Parliament.
The 58-km corridor is being developed under Namma Metro Phase IIA and IIB at an estimated cost of Rs 14,788 crore. The Silk Board-KR Pura stretch is expected to open by the end of 2026, followed by the Hebbal-Airport section in mid-2027. The remaining KR Pura-Hebbal stretch, one of the most complex sections of the project, is targeted for completion by the end of 2027.
The Parliament update also noted that Namma Metro Phase II is 95 per cent complete, while work on the proposed Orange Line is at an early stage, with 3.6 per cent physical progress.
Once operational, the Blue Line is expected to strengthen connectivity between Bengaluru’s IT corridor, eastern suburbs and the international airport, offering faster and more seamless travel across the city.

Among the key projects is the sanctioned 30-km Tambaram-Chengalpet fourth line, alongside the Arakkonam-Chengalpet doubling project, and the Attipattu-Gummidipoondi third and fourth line. Together, these projects are expected to increase line capacity, reduce congestion and enable more passenger and freight trains to operate across the city’s western, northern and southern rail corridors.

The Centre has also initiated planning for additional railway upgrades, including new multitracking and doubling projects across Tamil Nadu, signalling continued investment in the state’s rail infrastructure.

The Metro extension will improve integration with the Monorail and Harbour Line, making travel to Chembur, the eastern suburbs and south Mumbai more seamless.
