The leaves are just starting to turn in the Adirondacks, so it is time for the 28th annual Roland Christy Cup Invitational golf tournament. The match was played on August 30 at Thendara Golf Club. This is a fundraiser for the Roland Christy Scholarship awarded annually to a graduating senior in the Webb UFSD. Christy was a golf pro at Inlet Golf Club, and the tournament originated as a friendly rivalry between Inlet and Thendara GC. It more recently has become an invitational to benefit the scholarship fund with mixed teams representing both clubs. The winning team this year was Sal and Danielle Aversa and Jennifer Blakeman and Steve Young, pictured here accepting their first place prize from Dave Curtis, Tournament Chair. This year, the scholarship raised $1,250. — Photo submitted

Tuesday, September 15 is National Voter Registration Day, and the Old Forge Library is celebrating with a little civic engagement, a little ice cream, and a reminder that local elections matter.

National Voter Registration Day is a nonpartisan national effort to help eligible voters register, update their information, and get ready for the next election. This year, there is an especially good reason for Town of Webb residents to pay attention: New York State has changed the election calendar, moving many town elections into even-numbered years. That means Town of Webb voters will elect local officials as part of the November 3, 2026 General Election.

The Old Forge Library, 220 Crosby Blvd., will have voter registration forms and assistance available from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Need to register? Update an address? Not sure whether a registration is current? Have a question about the process? Stop by. The library will even provide the postage for completed registration forms.

Then, at 5 p.m., things get considerably more delicious. An Ice Cream Sundae Bar will be set up with all the fixings, because democracy is worth celebrating and voter registration is considerably more fun with sprinkles.

The deadline to register for the November 3 General Election is October 24. National Voter Registration Day is the perfect opportunity to get it taken care of early, especially with local offices now appearing on the November ballot.

Stop by the library on September 15, get registered, get questions answered, enjoy a sundae, and get ready to vote.

In conjunction with the Old Forge Firefighters Drill School, the Town of Webb Historical Association will host the 3rd Annual Little Mo and Blitz Buggy Truck Muster on Friday, September 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Forge Motel Knoll, across from the Old Forge Firehall. This free event offers a unique opportunity to see a piece of Old Forge history up close and learn about the locally built fire trucks that once represented an innovative approach to firefighting.

Museum representatives will be on hand throughout the day to answer questions, share stories, and explain the history behind these distinctive vehicles. Visitors can also vote for their favorite truck and enjoy seeing a variety of examples gathered together in one place.

The Little Mo and Blitz Buggy trucks have a special connection to the local community. Designed and manufactured in Old Forge and Thendara during the 1940s through the 1960s, these compact fire trucks were created with speed, versatility, and accessibility in mind. A total of 46 Blitz Buggy fire trucks were sold, with 38 of them built right here in Old Forge, New York.

The story began with Walter Lewis “Army” Armstrong, who envisioned a small, fast fire truck that could be first on the scene of a fire. His innovative design was capable of spraying water in multiple forms — from a powerful stream to mist or fog — depending on the circumstances. Built on a pickup or Jeep chassis and equipped with four-wheel drive, the vehicle was known as the Hi-Pressure Blitz Buggy.

Armstrong went into business with Phil Burdick and Edward Hurley, forming the High-Pressure Fog Company. The trucks were built at Brussel’s Garage in Thendara, while Army handled their marketing and sales through his fire equipment business. He traveled, demonstrated the trucks, advertised their capabilities, and sold them to fire departments looking for a compact and versatile firefighting vehicle.

In 1953, Armstrong separated from the company and went on to design a second fire truck — the Little Mo. Like the Blitz Buggy, the Little Mo reflected Armstrong’s inventive approach to firefighting and became another distinctive part of the region’s firefighting history.

Adding to the historical experience, copies of the Goodsell Museum’s newly published book, The History of Blitz Buggy, will be on hand and available for purchase, along with other firefighting keepsakes and memorabilia. If you’re a local history buff, a firefighting enthusiast, or simply fascinated by the ingenuity of these one-of-a-kind vehicles, you’ll want to take home a copy! All proceeds from the sales will benefit the Goodsell Museum.

The Truck Muster is a wonderful chance to see these unusual vehicles together, learn about the ingenuity of their designers and builders, and discover the important role Old Forge and Thendara played in their history.

Mark your calendars! The fifth annual Mohawk Valley Gives is almost here, bringing together nonprofits across Herkimer and Oneida counties for a powerful community-wide day of giving.

The Old Forge Library is thrilled to join local partner organizations across the Central Adirondacks and Mohawk Valley in this year’s event. Many neighboring groups are coming into the campaign with exciting challenge grants and matches, giving local donors a unique chance to stretch their support further than ever.

For the Old Forge Library, every gift will go twice as far. A generous local supporter has pledged a 1:1 match up to $15,000. That means every dollar you give to the library doubles its impact immediately, funding year-round calendar of free public workshops, vibrant community art displays, local history presentations, and cozy gathering spaces.

The Old Forge Library has always been more than a place to borrow books. Operating from our historic Tudor-style building on Crosby Boulevard, it is the community living room where neighbors catch up, kids discover new passions, and visitors find a warm welcome. From hosting 313 free programs a year to providing free Wi-Fi, computer access, and our 24/7 food pantry, the library works every day to keep our Adirondack town connected, supported, and strong.

Early giving opens Monday, September 14, leading up to the main day of giving on Friday, September 18, ending at 9 pm. You can make your double-impact donation directly on the Old Forge Library Mohawk Valley Gives Page.

During last year’s event, our region raised over $6.5 million to power local mission-driven work. We encourage everyone to explore the Mohawk Valley Gives Portal, take advantage of the matching dollars across all our local Adirondack organizations, and help keep our community thriving!

The event is proudly presented by Staffworks, M&T Bank, and Utica National Insurance Group.
