The Naval Group shipyard in Lorient hosted the launching ceremony of the second FDI frigate, Hellenic Ship (HS) Nearchos, on September 19, 2024.

The HS Nearchos frigate joined on the Scorff river her sistership HS Kimon, which is currently undergoing harbor trials before starting on her first sea trials. HS Nearchos will receive its Panoramic Sensors and Intelligence Module (PSIM) a few weeks after its launching.

The three Hellenic Frigates are now at an advanced stage of production, as the third unit, HS Formion, whose keel laying of its first block took place in April, has completed its hull assembly this August. One of her blocks, section 8, was manufactured by Salamis Shipyards in Greece. The three frigates will be delivered in 2025 and 2026.

The Brazilian Navy launched the frigate ‘Tamandaré’ (F200), the first of four planned in the class.

Thyssenkrupp Estaleiro Brasil Sul (tkEBS) in Itajaí, Santa Catarina, hosted the event. the PFCT is considered the most innovative shipbuilding project ever developed in Brazil, as it involves the transfer of technology and local labor.

The frigate, which was launched on August 9, is capable of safeguarding Brazil’s extensive maritime area, which spans over 5.7 million km² and is referred to as the “Blue Amazon,” and it possesses high combat power. Among other threats, the frigate is capable of conducting search and rescue operations, monitoring and combating pollution, piracy, and illegal fishing, in addition to its defense capabilities. It is also capable of fulfilling international obligations.

The Brazilian Navy’s capacity to protect the nation’s sovereignty is to be modernized by the PFCT, which also promotes the expansion of the national defense industry and the production chain necessary for shipbuilding on Brazilian soil. More than 6,000 direct and indirect jobs will be generated during the course of the program.

Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, Embraer Defense and Security, and Atech comprise the consortium known as SPE Águas Azuis. The Naval Project Management Company (EMGEPRON) is responsible for the management of the PFCT. Construction activities have made substantial progress in accordance with the established schedule since the contract with the Navy was signed in March 2020. The construction of the Frigate ‘Tamandaré’ commenced in September 2022, and it is anticipated that the Navy will receive it by the end of 2025.

The Geoje shipyard of Hanwha Ocean hosted the keel-laying ceremony for the second vessel of the KSS-III Batch-II submarine for the ROK Navy.

Members of the Republic of Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), Hanwha Ocean, and the ROK Navy attended the keel laying ceremony.

The capacity to provide timely logistics support for more stable construction and future operations will be improved by the incorporation of more indigenous parts and systems in the second KSS-III Batch-II submarine compared to Batch-I. The total number of localized systems will increase to 70 with the inclusion of 12 additional domestically produced systems, including the lithium battery system, in Batch-II. This anticipated increase in localization is expected to provide the KSS-III with a greater degree of freedom from export controls and intellectual property disputes in future submarine exports, thereby improving the competitiveness of Korean submarines in the global market.

Completion of the second submarine’s construction is anticipated by 2026, followed by sea trials, and delivery to the ROK Navy in 2028. The first submarine, which underwent its keel laying ceremony early last year, is scheduled to be launched in the first half of 2025. The third vessel is scheduled to undergo its steel cutting ceremony in the second half of 2024.

An Iranian Navy frigate, IRIS Sahand (74) has capsized and sunk in its home port of Bandar Abbas on July 7, 2024.

In Bandar Abbas, the Iranian Navy frigate IRIS Sahand (74), which was homeported there, capsized and sunk. With a 12-year age, the ship is one of the most modern surface combatants in the Iranian Navy’s fleet.

The local media reported the sinking of the frigate on July 7, 2024. There is a noticeable roll to her port (left) side, where her bow is higher than her stern. There is just the side of the hull and the sonar dome that can be seen above water.

Initial reports indicate a “technical failure” during repairs. Poor maintenance or a parking accident are likely, but sabotage is possible at this point. Iranian frigates are suspected of helping Houthis attack merchant ships in the Red Sea. Sometimes Sahand is deployed there.

The Iranian Navy (IRIN: Islamic Republic of Iran Navy) has had several major accidents recently. They include:

On January 10, 2018, Sahand’s sister ship Damavand (77) capsized and sank.
On June 2, 2021, the Kharg, caught fire and sank in the Gulf of Oman.
On December 6, 2021, The Talayieh capsized in a Bandar Abbas dry dock.
On May 11, 2020,  missile strike on the Konarak, An Iranian missile caused that friendly fire accident.

The Naval Group delivered the United Arab Emirates (UAE) second Gowind corvette, Al Emarat, during a ceremony in Lorient on June 27, 2024.

The official delegation of the United Arab Emirates Navy, led by Brigadier Abdulla Al Mehairbi, the Deputy Commander of the UAE Navy, attended the delivery ceremony of the Gowind®️ corvette Al Emarat, which was ordered by the United Arab Emirates and delivered to Naval Group on June 27, 2024, in Lorient.

Al Emarat is the second Gowind®️ corvette that the UAE has ordered from Naval Group in 2019. She commenced her sea trials in October 2023, coinciding with the delivery of the first corvette, Bani Yas, and was constructed in Lorient and launched in May 2022.

The Al Emarat crew will continue its operational ship training in France as part of the service solutions provided by Naval Group. The Emirati flag will be raised on the ship in July, and it is anticipated that it will arrive in Abu Dhabi in August.

The Gowind corvettes for the UAE Navy were constructed at the Lorient shipyard of Naval Group, with equipment that was locally manufactured by UAE industry. In order to effectively address the Navy’s future challenges, Naval Group is intensifying its partnership with the United Arab Emirates Navy. In order to provide the most comprehensive support for the maintenance of these two Gowind corvettes in the United Arab Emirates, the Group is also expanding its partnership with local industry. This program is a testament to our dedication to providing the UAE Navy with cutting-edge systems and our aspiration to establish Naval Group in the country on a permanent basis. We will achieve this by fostering industrial collaboration with our local partners.

The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) officially commissioned the sixth Mogami-class FFM, Agano, during a ceremony on June 21, 2024.

Named AGANO (with pennant number FFM-6), the 6th Mogami-class frigate, also known as FFM, is a next-generation frigate for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). Deployment of AGANO to the Maizuru Naval Base of the JMSDF is scheduled.

The vessel is named after the Agano River (あがの, 阿賀野川 Agano-gawa), a river located in the Hokuriku region of Honshu, Japan. In Fukushima, it is also known as the Aga River or the Ōkawa River. The class’s ships are each named after renowned rivers in Japan.

In December 2022, MHI introduced Agano in Nagasaki.

The FFM, which was previously known as the 30DX and is known as the 30FFM, is the next-generation multi-mission frigate that was specifically designed for the JMSDF. The JMSDF is anticipated to acquire a total of 22 Frigates.

The Russian Navy’s Gremyashchy-Class (Project 20385) corvette Provornyy was launched at the Severnaya shipyard in St. Petersburg on June 18.

Second Project 20385 (Gremyashchy-class) corvette, upgraded from Project 20380 Steregushchiy-class, is Provornyy. The ship’s keel was laid July 27, 2013. Western sanctions over the 2014 Russian annexation of Ukrainian Crimea slowed construction.

Instead of Steregushchiy-class engines, Project 20385 corvettes had Rolls-Royce MTU 16V1163 TB93 diesel engines with Renk reduction gearboxes. Also new were shaft lines and CPP propellers, likely from Andritz Hydro. CPP propellers on combat ships this size were new in Russia and the USSR. Active fin stabilizers from B+V Industriech were also purchased. German companies pulled out of Project 20385 corvette deliveries due to Russian sanctions. MTU stopped supplying main engines, but Gremyashchy’s propellers, shaft lines, and stabilizers could be transported to the shipyard. The program suffered greatly. The only option was to redesign the 20385 engine compartment for Russian propulsion.

Provornyy lost again on December 17, 2021. An evening fire started on the corvette under construction. The ship was severely damaged by organizational errors during firefighting.

The mast and upper superstructure were burned, and the vertical missile launcher was damaged. The Sriedne-Nevskiy shipyard in Pontonny near St. Petersburg makes the Project 20380 and 20385 corvette superstructures from vacuum-infused GRP laminates. Officials claimed that repairs would not delay construction, but this was propaganda. The new superstructure was installed on Proworny in November 2022.
