After more than three decades as a beloved fixture in New Bedford’s dining scene, Churrascaria Novo Mundo is bidding farewell to its original home at 98 County St. and embarking on a bold new adventure in Dartmouth. They are having an official grand opening this Friday, October 10, at 11:00 a.m.
The family-owned Portuguese Restaurant, renowned for its sizzling rotisserie chicken, tender steaks, and ribs, has officially relocated to a spacious new spot at 24 Cove Road in South Dartmouth—just a quick 10-minute drive from its former location. This move promises not only more room for patrons but also ample parking, addressing long-standing challenges at the bustling downtown site.
The story behind Novo Mundo is one of passion and perseverance. Owner Carla Amaral began her journey with the restaurant as a waitress before taking the reins in 2012. Now, she’s partnering with her son Jonathan to steer the business into its next era, shortening the name to simply “Novo Mundo” to reflect a streamlined, modern vibe.
What started as whispers of closure in early 2025 turned into celebration when the Amarals announced the purchase of the former Thirsty Whale property, complete with plans for an extensive kitchen remodel to house their signature charcoal grill.
Though the initial target was a summer opening, the transition has built anticipation, culminating in the closure of the New Bedford location on October 3. Fans needn’t worry—the core menu of Portuguese-style meats, hearty sides, and that legendary “hawt sawce” (now available in bottled form for take-home spice) remains unchanged. The relocation allows for growth, with the family eyeing expanded hours and perhaps even more community events.
Mark your calendars: Novo Mundo’s grand opening is set for this Friday, October 10, starting at 11am. Expect a festive ribbon-cutting, live music, complimentary tastings of their famed hot sauce, and all-you-can-eat specials to welcome old friends and new neighbors.
“We’re not just moving—we’re growing,” Carla shared in a recent update.
Whether you’re a longtime loyalist craving that perfectly seasoned chicken or a Dartmouth local curious about the hype, this is the perfect excuse to raise a glass (or a skewer) to fresh beginnings.
For reservations or more details, visit their website or follow along on social media. Novo Mundo isn’t just relocating—it’s rekindling the fire that has made it a South Coast staple. See you there!
