Scientists have uncovered one of the strangest tricks in parasitology: Schistosoma mansoni, a worm that infects over 240 million people each year, can slip into the body completely unnoticed. Most organisms that break through the skin cause a sting or itch, but this parasite enters with no warning at all.
Researchers found that when the larvae touch the skin, they release molecules that silence TRPV1+ sensory neurons the cells that normally alert the body to pain, heat, and danger.
