FIRST from WCME News -- Your 24/7 Breaking News Leader

Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s deputies have now released the identity of the man who died this morning in a two-vehicle head-on collision on Route 1 in Woolwich between the Montsweag Restaurant and Mountain Road.

Both vehicles, a Toyota Tundra and a box truck, burst into flames, and 38-year-old Alex Colson, the driver of the northbound car and a resident of Rockland, died at the scene.

Deputies say Colson's car crossed over the center line and the truck driver, 60-year-old Scott Rice of Waldoboro, attempted to avoid the collision, but was unable to do so.

Rice suffered non-life threatening injuries.

A large part of Route 1 was closed for four hours after the crash.

WCME News Update:

All three juvenile suspects in a burglary today in Bowdoinham are now in custody.

And some or all of these burglary suspects may also be suspects in a criminal threatening incident. The burglary at a residence near Bowdoinham Central School and related activity led to a lockdown at the school, which was later lifted, but which resulted in school buses this morning being diverted to Mt. Ararat Middle School, and classes canceled for the day in Bowdoinham.

WCME News -- Your 24/7 Midcoast Breaking News Leader

We're learning more about the details of the tax increment financing (TIF) proposal in Topsham, which is a key part of the plan to build what is now proposed as a 183-unit apartment project on Union Park Road--a proposal that will be the subject of a referendum on the November election ballot.

122 of the units will be at market rate, ten of the units will be affordable to those making no more than 80 percent of the area median income (AMI), and 51 units will be available to those making no more than 120 percent of area median income.

If approved by the Maine State Housing Authority, first preference will be given to people who work in Topsham and second preference will go to those working within 50 miles of Topsham.

The town's portion of TIF revenues could be used for schools and sidewalk, water and sewer improvements.

More on this project from Topsham Town Manager Mark Waltz throughout the Friday WCME Midcoast Morning Buzz from 6-9.

Below is an architect's conception of the project.

(Note: Feel free to discuss. But let's stay ON the subject. This is about your view of THIS project--not about your all-encompassing housing wish list. Thanks very much).

In Brunswick, one of those scenes that looked worse than the actual reality.

But still harrowing.

What police describe as a "very chaotic scene" when they arrived at Maine Pines Racquet and Fitness at 120 Harpswell Road, where a vehicle drove into the building, while people were playing tennis and exercising.

The vehicle had crashed through an outside wall and then sped across four active tennis courts before driving through the lobby and then into another room where it finally came to rest. Witnesses reported people running in all directions to avoid the vehicle as it sped through the building.

Surprisingly, there were only two minor injuries; to the driver, 72-year-old Michelle Vadeboncoeur of Gray, and a patron who had been struck by flying glass. Both were transported to Mid Coast Hospital, and the vehicle, a Jeep Cherokee was totaled.

The building had to be closed due to the damage.

An investigation is underway after the recovery of the body of an unidentified woman in the northern area of Woolwich--a body which has been transported to the medical examiner in Augusta for identification.

Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry says the death is not considered suspicious and there are no concerns for public safety.

First from WCME News -- Your 24/7 Midcoast Breaking News Leader

After a month-long investigation into the sale of co***ne base in Edgecomb, by the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency and Lincoln County sheriff's deputies, agents executed a search warrant for the residence of John Andretta and Jeanna Gustafson on Wawenock Road, where the two were arrested after several undercover drug buys.

Andretta has been charged with aggravated drug trafficking while Gustafson and Wyatt Cannady, a Massachusetts resident, are facing lesser trafficking counts.

All three are at the regional jail on various bail amounts.

Agents say they seized $17,000 in suspected drug proceeds and 68 grams of co***ne base. The estimated street value of the co***ne is $6800.

FIRST from WCME News

In a unanimous ruling, a committee of The Maine Principals’ Association has decided today that the Topsham-based SAD-75 school district CAN resume its hockey program after the district chose to suspend it last year due to a hazing incident.

The decision allows Mt. Ararat to join a new co-op team to be hosted by Lewiston High School and follows a move by the SAD-75 district to suspend the hockey program in February, violating a section of the MPA Rule Book regarding Non-Completion of Season.

Since then, Superintendent Heidi O'Leary says the district has taken several steps to move towards reactivating the program, including completing an investigation of the bullying incident, hiring new Athletic Director Heidi Wright, reimplementing new policies for locker room supervision, holding special training for all athletic coaches focused on healthy team cultures, establishing a relationship with the organization known as StopHazing, and creating an Ad Hoc Athletic Advisory Committee.

WCME News -- Your 24/7 Midcoast Breaking News Leader

After substantial review by both the City Council and the Planning Board in Bath, unanimous council approval for a somewhat controversial zoning amendment proposed by Bath Iron Works.

The plan, as approved, lessens the front setback limit in the city's industrial/shipyard district from 50 to 35 feet in the area stretching from Route 1 to Fisher Court, and from 50 feet to just 15 feet between Castine Avenue and Hinckley Street.

No particular proposed project has prompted these changes.

However, although he voted in support of the plan, Councilor Roo Dunn also wondered aloud whether our "future selves" may have some regrets about the changes, but also noted that these changes are only applicable in the industrial district.
