The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has announced a squad of 26 athletes to represent the country at the 2025 Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Region II Senior Athletics Championships, scheduled for 18-19 August at the University of Ghana Sports stadium in Legon, Accra.

The Nigerian team will participate in 20 events. These include the 100m, 200m, 110m hurdles, 400m, 4×100m relay, 4×400m relay, 4×400m mixed relay, 800m, Long Jump, Triple Jump, High Jump, Javelin, and Shot Put.

The team led by women's 400m veteran Patience Okon-George, under the guidance of Technical Director, Gabriel Okon and National Head Coach, Solomon Aliyu, will leave Lagos for Accra, Ghana on Saturday.

Cape Town to host 2027 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships

The 2027 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships have been awarded to the city of Cape Town in South Africa, marking the first time the event will be held in Africa.

Cape Town’s iconic Table Mountain will provide a stunning location for the championships, which will take place from 6-10 October 2027.

Kenya's Laban Kipkorir Chepkwony smashed compatriot David Rudisha's meeting record and a superb victory for Marie-Josee Ta Lou Smith in a star-studded women's 100m highlight an evening of high-quality action at the 2025 István Gyulai Memorial – a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting – in Budapest on Tuesday.

Kenya’s Mathew Kipchumba Kipsang finished strongly to win the men’s 3000m in 7:33.23 ahead of Mexico’s Eduardo Herrero (7:33.58).

Zambia's Olympic bronze medallist Muzala Samukonga won the men’s 400m in a season’s best of 44.11, ahead of Jereem Richards of Trinidad and Tobago (44.14) and American Khaleb McRae (44.16).

Nigeria's Samuel Ogazi finished in seventh place in 45.85.

CIV's Marie-Josee Ta Lou Smith held off Jamaica’s top trio in the women's 100m, securing victory in 10.97. Tina Clayton followed closely in 10.99, ahead of world 200m champion Shericka Jackson (11.00) and multiple world and Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (11.07).

Ethiopians Dejene Megersa and Buze Diriba will be part of a strong elite field at the 2025 Mainova Frankfurt Marathon on 26th October.

Betty Chepkemoi of Kenya, the surprise winner of the Vienna City Marathon, is also among the elite athletes announced on Tuesday.

Organisers experience an unprecedented surge of entries and currently expect a record number of 17,000 runners.

Swiss sportswear brand On just signed 3 new NIL athletes from Kenya - Doris Lemngole, Marion Jepngetich and Joy Naukot.

Doris will represent Kenya in Tokyo in the steeplechase and has made big strides toward becoming the greatest NCAA steeplechaser of all time. Marion is a rising star who placed 4th in the NCAA championships this past season, and Joy placed 3rd in the NCAA 10k.

Nathaniel claimed the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Championships 400m hurdles title, setting a new national record and earning the prestigious men's track athlete of the year award.

Kenya's Rosemary Wanjiru will head the elite women’s field of the 51st BMW BERLIN-MARATHON in the German capital on 21 September, 2025.

Wanjiru, who features a personal record of 2:16:14 and is tenth in the list of the fastest women in history, returns to the race where her marathon career got off to an impressive start in 2022. Three years ago she finished second in Berlin in 2:18:00.
