University of Juba has cancelled today’s exams due to movement restrictions around Freedom Hall, where the trial of suspended First Vice President Riek Machar is set to begin.

Riek Machar faces treason and other charges, accused of ordering attacks on an SSPDF base in Nasir last March that left more than 200 soldiers and a general dead.

The long-awaited court proceedings in the case involving suspended First Vice President Dr Riek Machar and seven other senior members of the SPLM-IO has begun this morning at the Freedom Hall.

Dr Machar and his co-accused face charges including murder, treason, conspiracy, financing terrorist acts, acts against state authorities, and crimes against humanity.

Breaking News: Heavy Clashes in Burebiey Leave Dozens Dead
Nearly 50 people were killed and more than 140 others wounded during fierce clashes between the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army-In Opposition (SPLA-IO) in the border town of Burebiey, Nasir County, officials have confirmed.
According to Upper Nile State Governor James Koang, the fighting erupted on Saturday and quickly escalated, leaving behind heavy casualties on both sides. Residents report scenes of panic as families fled the area to escape the violence.
The situation in Burebiey remains tense, with fears of renewed fighting in the coming days. Local leaders are urging for calm and calling on both parties to adhere to peace commitments under the 2018 revitalized peace agreement.
