In review this week:

Let’s be real: even the most hardcore of Tap-heads is going to find it tough to muster enthusiasm for such a dubious creative endeavour…

…Jan-Olé Gerster’s ominous portrait of a man and his isolation serves as a reminder that burying one’s head in the sand will ultimately lead to self-implosion…

…A new Stephen King adaptation has been dredged up to provide contemporary commentary on an America that’s currently being throttled by tinpot demagoguery and a general air of depraved malevolence…

…A heartbreaking snapshot of an unforgivable moment in history, and as this tapestry of Palestinian life unfolds on our screens, we must heed the call of the artists who made it.

…This doc about the World Porridge-making Championships contains very little cinematic roughage, offering a celebration of longtime tradition that preserves the hoary old stereotypes of having a group of women handle all the washing up afterwards…

In review this week:

Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke’s Cheeky noir runaround misses a few layers of intrigue and almost any satisfying pay-off, opting for more of an eye-rolling, Columbo-esque reveal than anything with any lasting impact…

…Albert Serra’s astonishing new film sits somewhere between  Paris is Burning, and those strange faux-ethnographic documentaries such as Mondo Cane which tease viewers with the prospect of seeing real people and animals die…

…Jacob Elordi’s committed turn as a queer gambler might be the most memorable part of this Shannon Pufahl book adaptation…

…And Jasmin Gordon’s debut feature refuses to shy away from the chaotic reality of grasping for a better life.

The Phoenician Scheme follows Anatole “Zsa-zsa” Korda (Benicio del Toro) – ruthless, unscrupulous, one of the richest men in Europe – who is constantly fighting for his life.
