Sometimes less is more. Making movement part of your long-term lifestyle means recognizing that sometimes doing less is more beneficial than trying to “crush” your movement goals. Whether you’re recovering from an injury or illness, or just feeling a bit run down, scaling back your workout today, may reduce your risk of injury and maximize your chances of being able to keep moving in the future.

Lab Lessons from FitLab Deep Creek.

Sometimes the Experts Know Best.

It’s been 6 days since Abbie the Black Lab’s spay surgery. Thanks to the team at Pineview Veterinary Hospital! While Abbie believes she’s ready to return to play, her veterinarian has advised us to restrict her activity level for a total of 10-14 days (no running, jumping, or climbing). We trust the expert, so we’re limiting Abbie to short, slow, leashed walks. By listening to the experts, we increase her chances of returning to full activity with no complications.

When you get outside to move, it’s easy to focus on your “workout” and tune out your surroundings…but one of the great things about taking your movement activities outside is taking time to explore. So every now and then, slow down. Take pictures. Ask questions of long-time residents. Do a little research. Learn more about the lands you enjoy.

We’re feeling the first hints of Fall in Western Maryland. But even if you’re still experiencing Summer heat, one thing is certain: seasons change. And if you want to make movement part of your lifestyle, you need a movement plan that adapts to the changing seasons. Maybe that means investing in Winter gear to keep you moving outside. Maybe that means creating a plan to move indoors. Whatever it means for you, now is the time to think about how you want to keep moving through the Fall and Winter.

Leave No Trace.

Our Labs, like their human staff, love to move outside, and we all do our best to make sure we leave the trails in the same (or better) condition as we found them. That means we stay off wet/muddy trails that might get damaged by our presence. We pick up after the Labradors 💩. And we try not to leave new rocks or sticks in our wake.

Choose activities YOU enjoy…rather than workouts that are trending or activities you think you SHOULD enjoy. Don’t worry about how you look or what other people might think. Just get up and move!

Take the Trail Less Traveled.

Our Labs, like their human staff, make movement a lifestyle. That means they like to move on most days. Some days they want to move fast…other days, they want to take time to sniff all the smells. How do we continue to enjoy our movement of choice during the crowded Summer months? We seek the trails less traveled (often those trails are rocky or hilly, and the Labs don’t mind at all).

Today is National Relaxation Day…an excellent day to acknowledge that sometimes you need a break. Maybe it’s a rest day from your movement routine. Or perhaps, as in our case today, it’s a day off from releasing a Movement Tips video. We’ll be back to our regular schedule on Monday with a new Lab Lesson. Until then, we hope you make time to move, rest, and play this weekend.

If you’re looking for long-term health, focus on the big picture. Certain social media influencers may suggest trying to crush your workout goals on a daily basis…but going too hard or too fast all the time is a path to injury and/or burnout. Instead, focus on the long term. Make movement part of your lifestyle. Go easier when you’re tired or when conditions are harsh (like summer heat and humidity), and challenge yourself when you’re well-rested or conditions are pleasant. One final tip: choose movement activities you actually enjoy!
