At Ranger School, the ruck was used to cut exhausted soldiers from the class, and one checkpoint nearly ended the journey before the first mile was complete. Years later, with no cadre, no stopwatch, and nobody forcing him forward, putting weight on his back began to mean something completely different.

Calling politics a “racket” sounds like ordinary cynicism until you examine what makes government different from nearly every other institution. Businesses must convince customers to participate. Governments can tax, regulate, and compel, which makes the incentives of the people controlling that power worth examining carefully.
