Aside from being a Chicago music mainstay and the mind behind long running genre-bending group The Sea and Cake, Prekop has maintained an ever-shifting visual art practice that has casually stretched across the mediums of photography, painting, and drawing for 30+ years.

Back when Will Miller (Resavoir), Matt Gold, and Mei Semones wrote “Diversey Beach” (from the recently released LP 𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐨𝐧), Chicago was still covered in snow and the idea of chilling at the lake with friends was still just a far-off dream.

Gold recalls: “When Mei, Claudius, and Noah came through Chicago on tour last month, we were excited about the idea of playing "Diversey Beach" together along the shore of Lake Michigan. Since their stunning contributions to the album version of this song were done remotely, this was actually the first time the five of us played the song together in person. We captured this performance quickly, breezily -- and we love how the sound of the waves and birds are woven into the texture of the song here. After writing "Diversey Beach" during the dead of winter, dreaming of a beautiful June afternoon, it was an incredible full-circle moment to play it just as we imagined it.”

We are thrilled to announce today 𝙃𝙮𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙜𝙡𝙮𝙥𝙝, the first new album in 11 years from composer/trumpeter/synthesist 𝗥𝗼𝗯 𝗠𝗮𝘇𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗸 (Exploding Star Orchestra, Isotope 217, New Future City Radio with Damon Locks) and composer/percussionist 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗧𝗮𝘆𝗹𝗼𝗿 (jaimie branch’s Fly or Die, Marshall Allen’s Ghost Horizons, Luke Stewart’s Silt Trio) under the 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗴𝗼 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝘂𝗼 moniker.

Mazurek and Taylor have played music together in a multitude of formations over three decades, even before the start of the Chicago Underground project as an avant-garde workshop at The Green Mill in 1996.

“Rob is my longest collaborator and also one of my best friends,” says Taylor, who first performed with Mazurek at a club in Chicago in 1988, aged 15.

“When it feels right we do it,” says Mazurek of the gaps in duo activity. “We have worked together and have been friends for a long time. This creates a kind of continuity not only in the music, but in our lives.”

While Mazurek and Taylor’s musical language can be clocked in the slew of projects that they participate in together, the sound of a CUD album is singular among them. Combine notes of AACM composers like Wadada Leo Smith; albums like Don Cherry & Ed Blackwell’s “Mu” and El Corazon; the classic cut-and-paste jazz production techniques pioneered by Miles Davis and Teo Macero; deep electronic sounds by Bernard Parmegiani, Morton Subotnick, Xenakis, and Éliane Radigue; transformative processing in the realm of Autechre, King Tubby, Mouse On Mars, and Carl Craig… and that gets us close to understanding the alchemic avant-garde sound of the CUD. Taylor adds: “There has always been a lot of African influence in the rhythms we play. With Hyperglyph specifically, we utilize rhythms from Nigeria, Mali, Zimbabwe and Ghana.”

Hyperglyph was recorded in three days at International Anthem Studios, Chicago, in May 2024, where the Duo worked intimately alongside engineer Dave Vettraino.
