PURE JOY! Tom Holland delivers my favorite chapter in his Spider-Man series and we couldn’t be more thrilled. Peter Parker is truly on his own, dealing with the grief of the choices he made in the last film and how they affect him as he tries to move forward, even though his heart is still with his friends. It’s a tale of emotion, twists and some of the most dynamic action scenes we’ve seen. The film is beautifully shot, capturing New York in a darker, more cinematic sense than the other movies, and the danger he faces is loaded with consequence, where losing what he loves is a real possibility. There is no doubt that this flick will be the most financially successful movie of the summer season, possibly the year, and they deserve it! As far as summer movies go, they definitely saved the best for last. We’ve seen it twice so far, and it only gets better with each viewing. A must watch for any geek, we give it a solid 9/10.

Bottom line: this is an outstanding film, with one important caveat. Go in expecting something that’s as much a theatrical production as it is a traditional movie. It often feels like a stage play brought to life on an epic scale with stunning visual effects. The presentation is highly artistic and, at times, reminiscent of Dunkirk with its pacing and documentary style of filmmaking.

Some reviews describe the film as fantastical, but I didn’t see it that way. While there are a few creatures, they’re grounded in reality, used sparingly, and never become the focus. CGI is surprisingly limited, with practical effects doing much of the heavy lifting—and they’re remarkably effective.

The cast is what truly elevates the film. Expect to see several Oscar nominations, as the performances are exceptional, especially from actors working well outside their usual comfort zones. Most of the acting is deliberately restrained and understated, making the emotional payoff in the climactic finale all the more powerful.

This is the kind of film that will likely be regarded as a classic within a few years. It’s absolutely worth experiencing on the big screen while you still can. We didn’t see it in IMAX, but I plan to watch it again in that format just to compare. 9/10

EVIL DEAD BURN? More like Evil Dead TURD. We just watched a 2 hour domestic disturbance event of family members going WWE on each other while possessed by dark forces. Normally I would love this kind of thing. But there was no real hero to cheer for. No major villain to hate. No one to like AT ALL in the cast. No real dialogue. Media folk continue to make excuses for this movie in their reviews online saying the GORE IS AMAZING and ITS SO BLOODY. If you’re a gore hound, admission is 10 bucks. Enjoy. Gratuitous power tool use free with every purchase.

The rest of us Evil Dead fans want a hero to rise and fight freakin’ EVIL. To lose people they love but to keep fighting. This movie feels more like a corporation’s best guess on what to do with an old IP that has a solid fan base. They borrow bits and pieces from other films and string it all together to deliver a soulless low budget high-gore caricature of a movie made 30 freakin’ years ago.

On the bright side, there is some cool camera work; the Director didn’t phone it in. The stunt team is on a whole other level. The amount of abuse that these people physically take is mind-boggling. There was just no script or story premise that was worthy of the creative talent that went into this. There are better movies to watch. 4.5/10, or zero percent groovy.

SUPERGIRL: This uncharismatic chapter in Gunn’s DC universe is a real disappointment. The movie just doesn’t have anything to say. It’s a group of scenes, some beautifully shot, that are strung together like a super hero checklist. It’s not inspired. It’s certainly not joyful. And it’s a wasted opportunity. For me, this movie was poised as the DC underdog - a chance to push its way past the usual DC titles like SUPERMAN or a BATMAN with a character that isn’t as mainstream. To play more. To push. To have some fun. The premise is suggested in the trailers and the tone was set in SUPERMAN - Kara Zor-El is the party girl cousin who is less than focused on playing hero. She’s coping with loss, guilt and lack of direction on a multi-planetary scale. Instead, the dialogue is amateurish and doesn’t give the actors much to work with. I have a feeling that this was too close to Guardians of the Galaxy in tone and energy at one point and someone pulled it back. Which, if so, was a mistake. This movie was an opportunity to expand the richness of the DC universe and instead did the opposite. It made if feel small. If James Gunn’s tenure as lead creative at Warner Bros. is in question, this movie isn’t going to help him. 5.5/10

This weekend at the Circle Cinema - JINSEI premieres on the 19th. "If you appreciate highly idiosyncratic, independent animation that leans into the weird, you will likely find Jinsei to be a spellbinding achievement." Written, directed, and hand-drawn entirely by debut filmmaker Ryuya Suzuki, the film has heavy themes, so it's not your usual fare. Sounds like the perfect opportunity to get tickets and support Tulsa's non-profit cinema!
