PRIME TIME: At first glance, this movie may not look like it belongs in the pop culture category, but it most certainly does. In the heyday of the early 2000s, reality TV ruled. Shows like this and Jerry Springer brought to light the more salacious underbelly of our culture, often times hidden by brighter lights and happier stories generated by Hollywood. Primetime is a time machine, taking us back to news networks and dial up Internet where Chris Hansen and his crew work feverishly to catch child predators in the early days of online messaging and chat rooms. Unfortunately the people behind the cameras are as flawed as the people they film. Robert Pattinson is an absolute marvel, as is the rest of the cast. This movie should deliver a few Oscar nominations, but the film itself is Oscar worthy, delivering a unique take on what could be a TV movie of the week. The camera work, the editing, the sound design is refreshing and unexpected with emphasis given to key moments in mindset, using soft focus and dramatic lighting to really maximize the emotional state of the characters at play. I went into this movie expecting nothing, and I got everything in return. Itās scary in some ways, more because itās closer to reality than our usual spooky season fare, but I think this is highly worth your time for a watch this weekend. We give it a 9/10.
