Take full control of your vMix production — without ever touching a physical Stream Deck.

In this episode of Streaming Alchemy, we dive into the powerful new Virtual Stream Deck feature available now in the Stream Deck 7 Beta. We’ll cover how to setup and position virtual decks anywhere on your screen—and how to configure them to streamline your production operations.

We'll start with a look at what Virtual Stream Decks are and what they can do, then set them up as overlays to control switching of a full vMix setup featuring a host and four remote guests connected through LiveToAirZ.

If you produce virtual or hybrid events with remote participants, this could be an easy way to simplify your workflows.

NDI Studio Monitor is a free tool that allows you to view multiple NDI sources simultaneously. It's a great way to keep an eye on all your cameras, video feeds, and other NDI sources that are part of your productions.

In this show, we'll be diving deep into NDI Studio Monitor and uncovering some of its hidden gems. We'll explore Studio Monitor’s less used – but incredibly useful - features and capabilities that go beyond just monitoring individual NDI sources.

For the past several months, we have been planning out a significant rebuild of our Streaming Alchemy studio. Our main goal in this was to create a space that could more easily be used for various types of productions – including live and prerecorded shows, Gnural Net demos, green screen virtual work, and gear reviews. This required a physical rebuild of the set both to give us a couple of different usable camera angles and to better use our limited floor space. Along with this, we wanted to take our mix of lights that we’ve been using and consolidate around a single vendor with a single lighting control interface.

On today’s show, we’ll go over the entire rebuild process we went through over the past few weeks. We’ll cover the physical construction of the set, our choice of lighting gear and how we set it up, and the other gear we are using to produce our content.

Many of today’s live productions involve informal, unscripted interactions with on-air talent discussing various topics. They can even have viewers calling in to share their thoughts and opinions. While all of this can create incredibly interesting and engaging content, it also introduces the opportunity for the occasional vulgar turn-of-phrase to make its way into the conversation – words that may not be appropriate for everyone in the target audience.

On today’s show, we’ll go over a vMix preset that adds a 3 Second delay to your stream to let you catch these slips of profanity before they go out live. It leverages scripts that let you “Beep-Out” audio (or even hide the video!) in the delayed stream while leaving the original Program Out unaltered for recording and more precise editing after the show.

Outside of supporting image sequences, vMix’s GT-Title has no way to directly integrate video-based media into titles. While a lot can be done using layers, it can be challenging to add video elements to titles leveraging built-in animation.

On today’s show, we’ll use some clever dynamic masking techniques to combine video elements with animated titles. We will use a few shortcuts wrapped as very small scripts to orchestrate the playout of these different elements to create a Christmas-themed dynamic Lower-3rd.

Last week, the vMix team posted a beta release of their new version 28 update. While there are many smaller refinements in this release, the main feature addition is built-in telestration – the ability to draw on top of a video or still image.

For today’s show, we’ve put together a basic classroom/tutor preset in vMix that leverages the new telestrator both for annotating lessons as well as for freehand problem solving. We’ll break down how we integrated the telestrator into this preset, and demonstrate how to work with it using an Apple iPad and Pencil Pro.

In our Post Show Hangout, I’d be happy to do a quick overview of some of the other updates found in the vMix 28 Beta and answer any questions I can about working with this update.

Virtual Sets can be used for more than greenscreen-based full production sets. One of our favorite ways to leverage them is for dynamic (and eye-catching) graphic elements.

On today’s show, we’ll cover how we made an iPhone-like virtual set in vMix that can be used to display remote callers or to demo mobile applications. We’ll use the MERGE function in our vMix Preset to have the phone slide in from the side of the display and recenter the host in the remaining open space.

Our remote guests will be connecting via Gnural Net’s Call-In One solution, and we’ll go over a simple script that reads the metadata it provides to automatically trigger the iPhone “slide in” when a caller is sent ON-AIR.
